‘It’s always been a dream to own MK1’

If you have been in Mbabane and heard a sky-coloured blue zoom past sounding like a beast that skipped breakfast, you have probably just missed Gildo ‘Wildman’ Gildo and his beloved Volkswagen MK1 Velocity.

Gildo affectionately named his car ‘Baby Blue’ after his beloved daughter. ‘Baby Blue’ is a real head turner on the street; he has been turning heads for two years now. “It has been two years now since I acquired this ride,” Gildo said proudly. He added that he takes his anniversaries with Baby Blue very seriously.

Why the MK1

“I chose my baby, instead of something newer or shinier because I like the fact that it makes grown men remember back in the olden days, it is also easy to maintain,” he said. Owning his own MK1 was his biggest wish because he has been obsessed with this type of car since way back, so owning one is definitely a dream come true for him.

What really set Gildo’s MK1 apart from the pack is that unmistakable baby blue coat, not just a paint job but a personality.

“The unique colour makes me feel like I have VIP access to every street corner,” said Gildo.

It is a soft eye catching sky blue that whispers ‘classy’ but screams ‘don’t race me unless you are ready’. Also, the size of ‘Baby Blue’ makes it possible for Gildo to enjoy his drives since he is able to speed and have fun in the road. He is also able to participate in races because he knows that ‘Baby Blue’ will never fail him. The Mk1is small but it struts like it owns every street in Mbabane.

‘Baby Blue’ runs in an ABF 2-litre, 16-valve DOCH engine with racing cams and the detector. Gildo upgraded it with the racing cams, to give it a more aggressive power band and to also help it breath better at higher RPMs for perfect high speed pulls. He also fitted it with the detector management to allow smarter and timing control, to give it better response, smoother turning and more efficient power delivery.
