If you ever needed proof that it is never too late to start, meet Nontethelelo Simelane, a woman who turned a simple home workout into a full-blown lifestyle. Her journey began in 2019, not in a fancy gym or under a strict coach, but in a space filled with what she jokingly calls ‘toys’. That was all she needed to get going and once she saw the results, there was simply no turning back.

Fast forward to August last year, she decided to lace up her running shoes and give running her full attention. The verdict? She is enjoying it ‘like nobody’s business’. And honestly, that joy shows.

Now, let us not sugar-coat it, because she certainly does not. Healthy living is not easy. There are temptations everywhere, days when motivation packs its bags and disappears and moments when giving up feels like the easier option. But Simelane keeps going. No regrets. Just sweat, determination and a good sense of humour.

Her routine is a powerful combination of running and lifting weights. She swears by it and for good reason. Running strengthens the heart and lungs, while weight training builds muscle and supports the joints. In simple terms, she is building a body that can carry her through life with strength and endurance. Also, let us not forget, more muscle means burning fat even while resting. Who would not sign up for that?

Beyond the physical, she highlights the mental benefits. Exercise releases those ‘feel good’ hormones that help reduce stress and lift your mood. Basically, it is cheaper than therapy and comes with abs if you are consistent.

Speaking of consistency, she sticks to a planned diet to stay on track. But her real secret? Purpose. “Have your why,” she said. Motivation will not always show up, but purpose will drag you out of bed when you least feel like it. She, of course, keeps it real and relatable. “It is all about looking good, always look good girl,” she laughed.

Healthy living is not about perfection, said Simelane who is in her mid 30s.

It is about making better choices every day. “Asiswenkeni sibangene,” she signs off with a smile. The Runner. FitforFaith. Still, we rise till the end of the last mile.
