For exterior house painting, winter offers the best conditions.

You can paint the interiors of your house in any season. However, for exterior house painting, you have to take the weather conditions and moisture level in consideration for a job well done.

So, painting the exterior of your house is not a task that can be done at just about any time of the year. You need to adjust your project around the weather and look for the best conditions to ensure a seamless job.

If you are thinking of painting your homes exteriors, keep in mind that choosing the right paints and services for an exterior paint job is a crucial step. Make sure that you pick the best quality that would guarantee you longer years without having to change your paint now and then.

It can be tricky to decide the best exterior paints since understanding their technical specifications may be confusing. To make it easier, a suggestion would be using paints that are designed to withstand harsh weather conditions and specifically used for exterior walls.

A sales paint consultant shared with us that before you start painting there are primers which include mendall 90, Polyfilla and bonding liquid, which are essential in making sure that your paint job is on point. “There are decorative paints used for walls and can be used at home and there is industrial paint used for big buildings. If your house has cracks make sure that your Polyfilla is there to help you manage, but if the cracks are quite huge, you can get a skim coat which also levels the walls,” he said.

“If by any chance you decide to repaint your wall and once you touch the wall and it dirties your hand, it is not recommended that you paint on that wall. This is called chalkiness, so you need the bonding liquid first which is a sealer to seal off the chalkiness first before you apply the finishing paint. Also, the bonding liquid may be applied when the walls with the old painting job have started peeling off,” he added.

Damp walls

Sometimes you find that in some areas, the weather conditions may cause the walls to be damp, you would need what is called a damp seal. Major fluctuations from day to night temperatures can cause the paint to crack and peel, this may be caused by the rising damp, so it is suggested that you may need to start by plastering and then applying the damp seal to help prevent your walls from being damaged from the ground up.

Walls with drawings

If you feel like you need to protect your walls from children and pets, you can consider the wash and wear silk (double velvet) which is cleanable. If you’re in the Hhohho Region the consultant says that it is recommended that you use wallseal, wall and all which are types of paint you can use, while in the Shiselweni Region you can use micatax.

Roof painting

You can paint a roof, but it’s not always the best solution. Maybe you want to give your home a makeover without paying the cost of a new roof or you’re hoping to reduce your energy bills with a bright roof paint that absorbs fewer UV rays. In these cases, painting a roof can be a worthwhile project.

Keep in mind that you’ll need to choose a paint that works for your specific roof type and you’ll need to work carefully to prevent the paint from trapping moisture and becoming a hub for mold. Also, painting a roof isn’t a replacement for making repairs. You’ll need first to inspect your roof and repair any damage to properly prep the surface for roof paint.

Why winter is a good time for exterior house painting:

It is key to know that when you are preparing for the winter job, you are aware of the temperatures because if it is too cold in the morning there might be moist, so it would be impossible for the paint to stick well. Make sure that the temperatures are above 10°C before you can start painting.

Less humidity

For exterior house painting, winter offers the best conditions. The humidity is likely to be low unless you live in a place that experiences a lot of frost. More humidity in the air may result in peeling of the paint or cracking in the future. Since during winters, the moisture in the air is usually low, it allows the paint to stick and create a better bond with the walls.

The weather conditions

Summers and rainy season is not a good time for an exterior paint job and this is a no brainer! After all, no one wants to be stuck out carrying out an exterior house painting while it is raining or scorching outside.

Winter is the perfect time, so why not use this time of the year to schedule a home improvement project that you have been thinking about? Good weather conditions also reduce the time required for the paint job to be done.
