Any attempt to live the Christian life apart from ceaseless faith in the Cross alone, results in dismal failure because such a practice is really a rejection of the Cross and constitutes cross-less Christianity. The Cross is Jesus Christ in tandem with what He accomplished for mankind through His crucifixion. The Cross is the only God ordained object we must live by placing our faith in. This is contrary to church doctrine and Christian practice.
The church correctly preaches that the new birth is a result of exclusive faith in the Cross alone, but commits the error of teaching that after the new birth the believer must live by faith in works or church disciplines.
If it is not a life of ceaseless faith in the Cross alone, it is Christianity without the Cross. Cross-less Christianity is exactly what happens when people keep the label ‘Christianity,’ but drop the Cross as the only object of their faith for living.
The Apostle Paul stated that the Galatians had fallen from grace because they kept the name ‘Christian’ but added the law of Moses or circumcision for acceptance.
This is what he said about them: “Christ is become of no effect unto you, whosoever of you are justified by the law; ye are fallen from grace,” Galatians 5:4.
Judge for yourself whether you have fallen from grace by practicing Cross-less Christianity. Adding anything to the Cross for acceptance to God results in falling from grace. Falling from grace is akin to frustrating God’s grace as stated by Paul in Galatians 2:21.
Frustrating God’s grace is actually cancelling the flow of God’s grace into your life and this results the total failure of your Christian life because we live by grace through faith in the Cross alone as stated in Ephesians 2:8 by the Apostle Paul. Paul also had a similar rebuke for the church at Colossae. The Colossians were adding philosophy, angel worship and ascetic rules to their Christianity (Colossians 2:8, 16-23). This practice resulted in their fall from grace. They thought they were still following Jesus Christ, yet this was not the case because they made all these additions to the Cross.
The church in Corinth also wanted the Christian life but sadly, out of ignorance, they wanted it without faith in the Cross alone. The Corinthians boasted of wisdom, status and spiritual gifts while living Cross-less lives. Paul says the Corinthians were chasing all these instead of the Cross. They treated the message of the Cross as foolishness and a stumbling block.
Their preference for impressive rhetoric and status meant they were trying to live as Christians without ceaseless faith in the Cross which alone saves and defines the Christian life.
Is the Church in Eswatini not in the same predicament? Are we not living by faith in Church disciplines? Let us pray for the illumination of the Cross to every liSwati so that the church in Eswatini can be free from Cross-less Christianity.
