MBABANE – Students from UNESWA’s three campuses gathered at Kwaluseni for the inaugural Kick-Off Carnival.
Powered by MTN Pulse, the event welcomed first-year students, shook off the holiday rust and set an energetic tone for the new semester. It delivered a full day of entertainment, connection and community-building.
From 11am on Friday, the grounds buzzed with activity as students enjoyed a zipline, jumping castles and canvas painting. They also competed for prizes, including smartphones, MTN T-shirts, pens and key holders.
The entertainment line-up showcased local musical talent. Sancheziey, Thaifo Son, Young Zesh, Hapkoo and Mco Jamrock energised the crowd, while DJs Sbu De Drum DJ, Bandora, Gifted Kosie, Obsession and others kept the atmosphere vibrant throughout the day.
Beyond the games and music, the carnival marked a milestone in corporate-academic relations and highlighted the long-standing partnership between the university and MTN Eswatini.
Vice Chancellor Justice Thwala said MTN’s support for the institution was deep-rooted and extended across several sectors. He recalled the company’s crucial assistance during the COVID-19 pandemic, when it provided data bundles for online and blended learning. He also cited student masterclasses linking learners with MTN management and industry specialists, sponsored fun days and support for the Mvasi League.
Thwala also acknowledged MTN’s contribution to academic infrastructure and digital literacy. This included computers for the Department of Electrical and Electronic Engineering, the MTN Skills Academy for students’ digital training and support for teacher training in artificial intelligence through the ‘21 Days of Yello Care’ initiative.
“Today’s carnival is another step in building a partnership that creates meaningful value for our students and the university,” Thwala said. He thanked MTN for believing in the students, investing in their well-being and future, and building a partnership that went beyond business to create opportunities for a better generation.
MTN Eswatini Chief Executive Officer Jerry Soko said the telecommunications company was collaborating with the university on several other initiatives to be unveiled to the campus community.
Students thanked MTN for the opportunity to unwind, connect across campuses and begin the academic semester on a high note.
