LOBAMBA – South African businesswoman Shauwn ‘MaMkhize’ Mkhize’s Mbabane Highlanders AM played out a goalless draw against Green Mamba in a pulsating MTN Premier League opener at Somhlolo National Stadium today.

A sizable crowd watched under cool skies as Floyd ‘Mourinho’ Mogale sought to end the ‘Bull’s four-year winless run against Green Mamba. Their last victory over the side was a 2-1 scoreline during the 2021/22 season.

With both teams seeking redemption following early 8Bet Trade Fair Cup exits and Green Mamba’s elimination from the CAF Confederation Cup, assistant coach Dumisani ‘DU’ Makhanya led the correctional services side while Mthunzi Ginindza was away on national team duty.

Highlanders started brightly, but Sikhumbuzo Mazibuko’s third-minute effort slid past the post. Two minutes later, Green Mamba’s Nhlanhla Ngwenya saw his strike shave Qiniso ‘Kati’ Nyawo’s post. Nyawo then denied Machawe Dlamini, whilst captain Sibongakonkhe Silenge cleared to deny Sphiwe Cele inside 17 minutes.

Zwelihle Phewa squandered a key chance at the half-hour mark, failing to capitalize on Mazibuko’s free-kick. Green Mamba earned three corner kicks taken by returning playmaker Banele ‘Pupu’ Sikhondze, but could not profit. Former Green Mamba forward Bhekani Mthembu headed over the bar on his debut just before half-time.

Three minutes after the restart, Lindokuhle Manda repelled substitute Nkosivumile Zulu’s effort, with Peter ‘Beast’ Dlamini clearing before Manda gathered Smiso Gumede’s rebound. Nyawo remained alert at the other end, making two crucial saves to deny Njabulo ‘D4D’ Ndlovu following link-up play between Siyabonga ‘Gusheshe’ Zwane and Bongi Siphepho.

Ultimately, referee Wandile Mamba’s final whistle confirmed a share of the points as both sides fired blanks on opening day.
