Nontsetselelo Mayisela is a passionate and driven young woman whose journey in the world of fashion and modelling is as inspiring as it is powerful.

With a love for self-expression through fashion, creativity and modelling, she embraces her voice and presence to empower others, especially young women from underrepresented communities.

“I am someone who believes in the power of hard work, authenticity and using my voice and presence to inspire others—especially young women from underrepresented communities,” the model said.

Describing herself as resilient, ambitious and grounded, Nontsetselelo shared: “I’m someone who embraces challenges and uses them as stepping stones. I am also deeply committed to personal growth.”

This mindset has driven her to keep pushing boundaries and to use each obstacle as fuel for her ambitions.

Her love for modelling began with a fascination for fashion and photography.

“I was drawn to how models express emotion and tell stories without saying a word. Seeing the confidence and strength that came with being on the runway or in front of the camera, made me realise this was something I wanted to pursue,” the model said.

It was this realisation that transformed her passion into a purposeful career.

She cites iconic figures in the fashion world as her inspiration.

“I’m inspired by models like Naomi Campbell for her trailblazing role in the industry, and Adut Akech for how she represents African beauty on global platforms with such grace.

“I also admire local models like Coralee Vilakati, who is making waves and staying true to her roots, she reminds me that it’s possible to be recognised while remaining authentic,” she said.

Among her proudest achievements is walking on one of South Africa’s biggest stages, the Metro FM Awards.

“Walking for AFI (Africa Fashion International) dressed from the collection of Nala Prive validated all the hard work and sacrifices,” she said.

Another milestone was participating in editorial shoots that gained recognition.

“This moment keeps me motivated and reminds me that dreams are valid when you stay consistent,” she said.

Speaking of the Metro FM Awards, she recalled: “It was an incredible experience, truly a career highlight. Sharing the stage with big artists like Langa Mavuso, Mawelele, Naledi Aphiwe and models while representing the best of South African fashion was both humbling and empowering. The energy backstage was so amazing, and I was treated like a professional.”

The event served as a catalyst for her growth and reinforced her belief in the power of the industry to bring people together creatively.

That experience inspired her to set even higher goals.

“Being part of such a prestigious platform showed me that my work is being recognised and that the possibilities are endless when you believe in your craft,” she said.

Discussing the current state of the modelling industry, she acknowledged progress but highlighted ongoing challenges.

“The industry is becoming more accessible, but challenges remain. Social media has opened doors for many aspiring models, but access to professional training, fair opportunities and representation can still be limited,” she said.

Nevertheless, she pointed out that the pathways have improved considerably from the past.

“All I can say is getting into the industry is not as hard as it was before. Now castings are posted on social media, one just has to practice and have a good Z-card for applying or let me say, pictures which are polaroids. Brands need to know if they can trust you with their brand just by looking at your application,” she explained.

Nontsetselelo also discussed how collaboration has played a crucial role in her rise. “The collaborations came through mutual networking and shared creative visions. They appreciated my brand, style and social media presence. It turned into a beautiful partnership,” she said. This synergy helped elevate her profile and exposed her to new audiences, illustrating the power of aligning with businesses that share one’s values.

Looking ahead, the model has ambitious plans for the future.

“In the next five years, I hope to be an established name in both local and international modelling.

“I want to work with global brands, mentor aspiring models and create a platform that promotes diversity and confidence,” she said.

Her vision extends beyond personal success; she is determined to forge opportunities for others.

She also intends to expand into entrepreneurship, with a focus on making a lasting impact.

“I also plan to expand into entrepreneurship and use my influence to make a lasting impact for young girls from the villages with no hope,” she said.
