MBABANE – Manzini Wanderers Chairman Wellington Motsa believes Eswatini’s ‘Big 3’ football clubs are neglecting their responsibility of football development in the country.

The chairman of the maroon and white ‘hub giants’ was referring to Mbabane Highlanders, Mbabane Swallows and Manzini Wanderers as the nation’s dominant football teams. Motsa made these remarks during the Monday Sports Review Show, hosted by Donatus ‘Nkonotja’ Zwane at the Eswatini Broadcasting and Information Services (EBIS).

Motsa began by acknowledging that other teams, such as reigning MTN Premier League champions Nsingizini Hotspurs, Moneni Pirates, Tambankulu Celtics and the recently-rebranded Illovo (now Ubombo Sugar), will contribute to improving the standard of the sport in the country. “I think the three big teams – Mbabane Swallows, Mbabane Highlanders and Manzini Wanderers – have let down our football,” Motsa stated.

He elaborated that these clubs should be significantly more advanced in terms of owning their facilities, establishing structured academies and consistently developing players. “As of now, none of these clubs possess such an infrastructure. Seeing the company supporting Illovo again will undoubtedly help improve our football,” he added.

Motsa revealed that Illovo’s rebranding to Ubombo Sugar Football Club would serve as a benchmark for other teams. “We are observing what Nsingizini Hotspurs are doing, as they too are enhancing the standard of football in the country,” he noted.

He further suggested that the revitalisation of these emerging teams is providing healthy competition for the ‘Big Three’ clubs, which, in turn, will contribute to the overall improvement of Eswatini’s football.
