MBABANE – Eswatini has missed out on the ongoing World Athletics Championships.
The 2025 World Athletics Championships are currently underway in Tokyo, Japan. They are taking place from September 13 to September 21, 2025 and approximately 2 200 athletes from nearly 200 countries are competing in 49 events.
While Eswatini has been a consistent participant at the World Athletics Championships since the first event in 1983, including the most recent ones in 2022 and 2023, there is no representation this year.
Athletics Eswatini (AE) President Zakhele explained the reason for the unfortunate situation, saying Eswatini had hoped to send sprint sensation Bongiwe Mahlalela.
“We had entered Bongiwe Mahlalela, and unfortunately, she got injured. By that time, entries had been closed for athletes attending through the universality slot,” said Dlamini.
Universality slots are a key component of the qualification system for the World Athletics Championships.
