BIG BEND – Mbabane Swallows, Manzini Wanderers and Tabankulu Celtics might face possible disciplinary fines that could climb well beyond E100 000.
This follows a weekend marked by pitch incursions, threats directed at match officials and tunnel scuffles that may be deemed to have brought football into disrepute.
According to MTN Premier League Rules and Regulations, Swallows alone could face a maximum combined charge of over E95 000, while Wanderers and Callies may each be fined upwards of E65 000. These penalties may stand if cited in the match officials’ reports, which must be submitted within 48 hours after matchday.
Both Mayaluka Stadium and Mavuso Sports Centre remain open grounds, with no perimeter fencing to prevent supporters from entering the playing area – a factor that has repeatedly heightened match-day security risks.
Swallows’ trouble stems from chaotic scenes at Mayaluka Stadium on Sunday after their 1–1 draw with Malanti Chiefs, where fans surged towards the pitch in anger at the officiating. The incident falls under Regulation 35.3(c), which carries a summary fine of E25 000 for pitch invasion.
The situation escalated as match officials were subjected to threatening behaviour. Such conduct falls under Regulation 35.3(f)(viii), with fines ranging from E10 000 to E30 000, plus mandatory compensation should any official suffer financial loss.
Some supporters were also heard uttering abusive and derogatory language as tensions rose. Under Regulation 35.3(f)(ix), this offence carries a fine between E25 000 and E40 000 and applies equally to players or officials who may incite unrest.
Police officers had to scramble to protect the officials, as they were temporarily stranded on the pitch, forming a tight cordon while awaiting reinforcements. Senior figures such as Sandile ‘Chief’ Dlamini and PLE Executive Committee member Sandile ‘Beyond 2000’ Zwane intervened to restore calm, urging supporters to disperse before the situation deteriorated further.
