The entertainment industry in the Kingdom of Eswatini, like creative sectors globally, is a landscape defined by significant hurdles: Limited funding, inconsistent income, a small local market and the constant challenge of securing international recognition. Yet, it is within this environment that the nation’s artists forge a potent mix of resilience and purpose, transforming personal passion into powerful cultural assets.

They do not just create, they build platforms, foster community and define the contemporary voice of emaSwati. Purpose is the clear vision that guides their artistic output, ensuring their work is meaningful, authentic and reflective of the nation’s spirit.

One of the most compelling examples of this resilience in the visual arts is Thembinkosi Mabuza. At just 20 years old, Mabuza has already secured international recognition, being crowned the Best Young Achiever Pencil Artist of the Year at the Young Achievers Africa Awards. His journey began humbly, self-taught and fuelled by a simple passion for drawing. Despite facing financial challenges that prevented him from attending the ceremony in Rwanda, his commitment to his craft remained unbroken.

Mabuza’s resilience is his commitment to self-improvement through mentorship and consistent practice. His purpose transcends creating stunning celebrity portraits; it is to challenge the perception of art as a hobby and to build a professional path for young creatives in Eswatini. He publicly articulated a desire to create art that resonates with people’s emotions and experiences, not just faces but feelings, showing a commitment to work that serves a deeper emotional and social function. His success serves as a powerful inspiration, validating the potential of Eswatini’s youth on the continental stage. In the music industry, !Sooks born Sukoluhle Dlamini, is an award-winning Electronic music creator and DJ. His signature sound which blends emotive cinematic House beats with native Eswatini drums and synths demonstrates a powerful cultural fusion. Achieving success in a globalised genre like Electronic Dance music requires relentless resilience, the ability to produce world-class work and consistently market it beyond local borders.

! Sooks’s purpose is embedded in his art: To put Eswatini on the map as a source of premium globally competitive music. His journey has taken him to international stages including the prestigious Amsterdam Dance Event in the Netherlands. Another notable example is Mandisa Mamba, a multifaceted artist and entrepreneur. Despite taking a two-year hiatus to focus on personal growth, she returned to establish herself as a prominent figure, winning awards and achieving success with singles like ‘Fault in the Stars’ and coming back with her single ‘Echo’. Her journey illustrates resilience through personal evolution and her purpose extends to acting roles such as Queen Choshile in the film ‘Baka Ngwane’ using her platform to celebrate Eswatini’s vibrant culture and heritage through storytelling.

One last artist is Velemseni Ndzimandze, the Eswatini Queen of Soul. Her musical purpose is deeply rooted in interpreting and documenting the ‘magical and mysterious’ mystique of the kingdom, blending African Soul, Cinematic and Traditional music.

When reflecting on the challenges of the industry, particularly the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic,  Velemseni’s purpose to represent her country with solemnity and dignity kept her focus sharp.

This purpose translates into creating high-quality authentic music that not only resonates with local experiences but also secures airplay on international platforms like Trace Africa and MTV Base.

Her mission is not just to sing, but to be an ambassador using her craft to put the Swati sound and aesthetic onto the global canvas.
