On our lead today, we feature a young man who has been keeping social media users glued to their TikToks for his hilarious skits.

Andile Nkambule turned lockdown boredom into his creative season for comedy.

Nkambule, a name now synonymous with side-splitting social commentary in Eswatini, has a journey rooted in the quiet communities of kaHlatsi and Matsapha.

Born in Magele and raised in Matsapha, Nkambule’s foundational years at Matsapha/Kwaluseni Central Primary School and Matsapha Swazi National High School were an unwitting apprenticeship in comedy.

“Comedy has been a part of my life for a very long time,” Nkambule reflected.

“I think I’ve always been the one guy who made means to make light of every situation and make people laugh,” he said.

However, the transition from class clown to conscious comedian occurred when he joined his high school drama team.

It was here, on the amateur stage, that he began to ‘appreciate Comedy as an act’.

This early exposure planted a seed that would blossom years later under the most unusual of circumstances of the global pandemic.

Like many across the globe, Nkambule found himself grappling with idleness during the Covid-19 lockdown.

“Boredom was playing with nobody back then,” he recalls.

It was a catalyst for creative necessity. He needed an outlet to channel not only his own frustration but also that of the community around him. This need for expression is how he stumbled into content creation on social media.

“So, I had to find an outlet to play out my frustration and that of the people around me with the whole situation, and it all grew from there till today,” he said.

That simple act of seeking an outlet has since grown into a growing career built upon a foundation of original thought and consistent delivery.

Nkambule cites comedic heavyweights such as Dr Hillary Okello, Trevor Noah and Rowan Atkinson as his primary influences. While he absorbs various lessons from their work, one principle stands above all others: Originality.

“They influence me in a lot of ways but what I take from them mostly is the originality of their content and style. They have always looked for ways to thrive and be extraordinary,” he explains.

This relentless pursuit of originality has become Nkambule’s professional mantra. It ensures that every day is a quest for betterment.

“So, this put me at a place where each and every day, I’m looking at ways on how I can improve and create new, original and creative content and at the same time being relatable to my audience,” he said.

He strongly believes this is his competitive edge.

“Like I have just said above, I’m more original and always looking at ways on how I can improve my content as well as keeping in touch and relatable to my audience without any compromise. I think that’s my strength,” he asserts.

In a moment of refreshing candour, he addresses his perceived weakness.

“As for weakness, I can’t say much except that I do believe that I’m not at all operating at my optimum potential. There’s still more I can do than what I am currently doing,” This recognition of untapped potential fuels his continuous drive.

When asked about his ‘breakthrough moment’, Nkambule dismisses the idea of a sudden explosion of fame.

His success, he insists, is the result of persistent effort rather than a single viral video.

“I can’t really say when was the breakthrough moment because this has been quite a down the valley and up the mountain journey.
