MBABANE – The local sporting landscape is on the verge of a major leap as the long-awaited Sports Bill officially enters the legislative arena.

The landmark legislation, which is expected to transform Eswatini’s sporting sector, is set to be debated by Parliament. This follows a major breakthrough confirmed by the Minister for Sports, Culture and Youth Affairs, Bongani Nzima in the Senate this week. During the ministry’s sitting, the minister revealed that the Bill—a focal point of discussion within the fraternity since 2020, has finally been tabled.

Minister Nzima stated that the Bill is now with the House of Assembly for debate, with hopes that it will soon reach the House of Senate.

He highlighted the success of local sport, personalities already hoisting the national flag high internationally, such as Video Assistant Referee (VAR) specialist Letticia Viana, as a primary reason to professionalise the sector. The Sports Bill, once enacted, is expected to be the catalyst for this shift.

“Ladies and gentlemen, the Sports Act is imminent. As a sporting fraternity, we must prepare ourselves for the changes it will bring; some of which may require us to move beyond our comfort zones. At the same time, we must position ourselves to fully benefit from the many opportunities it will present,” Nzima added during the MulaSport National Sports Awards held two days ago.
