MBABANE – Eswatini’s export drive has received a significant boost after local products valued at nearly E2 million were successfully shipped to Taiwan.
This signalled growing international demand and the effectiveness of targeted market access initiatives.
The milestone, facilitated by the Eswatini Investment Promotion Authority (EIPA), was achieved through the Eswatini Cultural Festival in Taiwan, a flagship platform showcasing the kingdom’s culture, craftsmanship and commercial potential to global audiences.
Among the participating brands were Black Mamba Foods, Tintsaba, Swazi Candles, Swati Secrets and Baobab Batik, reflecting a diverse mix of agro-processed goods, textiles and handcrafted products.
The export success highlights the increasing appetite for Eswatini-made goods in international markets, while also highlighting the tangible benefits of strengthened economic cooperation between Eswatini and Taiwan.
EIPA played a central role in coordinating the participation of local producers, artisans and agribusinesses at the festival, ensuring that they could tap into a high-impact international platform.
The exhibition featured a broad range of products, from traditional crafts such as grass weaving and batik to organically certified agricultural goods, demonstrating both authenticity and export readiness.
At the heart of this progress is the Economic Cooperation Agreement (ECA) between Eswatini and Taiwan. The agreement, which covers nearly 200 product lines, provides preferential market access and enhances the competitiveness of Eswatini exports in Taiwan. Analysts say such frameworks are critical in lowering trade barriers and enabling small economies to integrate into global value chains.
The Cultural Festival also attracted high-level political attention, with Lin Chia-lung, Taiwan’s Minister of Foreign Affairs, in attendance. His presence underscored the importance Taiwan places on deepening bilateral relations with Eswatini, one of its few remaining diplomatic allies.
A major highlight of the event was the announcement of the Prosperity Economic and Trade Office, a strategic initiative aimed at strengthening collaboration between government and the private sector. EIPA views the new office as a key mechanism to unlock further trade and investment opportunities, particularly for small and medium enterprises seeking to scale beyond domestic borders.
