You can’t see them, but they’re everywhere found deep in your carpets, snuggled in your pillows, and floating silently through the air. Dust mites. These very small creatures are one of the most common, yet overlooked, triggers for allergies in the home. “At Clean Zone, where we specialise in cleaning and disinfection services, we see first-hand the damage that they can cause in homes, mentioned Melusi Dlamini, a specialist at Clean Zone.

What’s the difference between a dust mite and a bedbug?

Bedbugs are larger than dust mites, and you can see them with the naked eye. The key difference, however, is that bedbugs bite humans and feed off their blood. Dust mites can irritate your skin, but they don’t bite you.

Dust mites belong to the same family as spiders, and they feed on dead skin cells, house dust, pollen, and even fungal spores. While they don’t bite or sting, they are far from harmless.

Their droppings and decaying bodies can trigger serious health issues in sensitive individuals, including asthma, hay fever and eczema.

Common symptoms of a dust mite allergy include:

  • Sneezing
  • Coughing
  • Runny or stuffy nose
  • Itchy, watery eyes
  • Red, itchy skin
  • Itchy throat
  • Fatigue
  • Sleeping difficulties

Depending on the severity of your dust mite allergies, this condition may also trigger asthma. You may notice wheezing, coughing, and chest pain as a result.

According to Dlamini, a specialist at Clean Zone, the most common places to find dust mites are your mattresses, bedding, carpets, curtains, and sofa’s. “They survive in warm, humid environments,” he explained. “That means bedrooms are the best place for dust mites, especially under beds and in areas where cleaning is often skipped.”

So, how do you fight back?

Unfortunately, you can’t completely eliminate dust mites, but you can reduce their numbers and their impact on your health.

Here are Dlamini’s top tips for keeping dust mites under control:

In the bedroom:

  • Wash bedding weekly in water hotter than 60°C or use eucalyptus oil drops during your laundry.
  • Open curtains and let the light hit the bed to discourage mite growth.
  • Invest in dust-mite-proof covers for mattresses and pillows.
  • Declutter: Remove rugs, unnecessary pillows, and plush items from the room.

Around the house:

  • Use a damp cloth to trap dust instead of scattering it.
  • Consider replacing carpets with hard flooring, and swap fabric curtains for shutters or blinds.
  • Keep humidity low, use dehumidifiers or improve ventilation where possible.

“If your allergies flare up constantly at home, especially at night, dust mites could be the hidden enemy, at Clean Zone, we believe prevention is better than cure. Regular professional cleaning combined with these home strategies can create a healthier, more breathable environment for you and your family.” mentioned Dlamini.
