A wave of hope is sweeping across the country following an announcement by the University of Eswatini (UNESWA) that a D grade pass in English is now acceptable for admission into the institutions Agriculture, Science and Engineering programmes.
In a statement shared with prospective applicants, the university described the development as good news for students who may have previously felt held back by their English results.
For many school leavers, that single subject has often stood between them and their dreams of becoming scientists, engineers and agricultural specialists. Now, doors that once seemed firmly shut are opening.
The university encouraged prospective students not to let doubt stand in the way of their qualifications. Applications for the 2026/2027 academic year are officially open, with the institution urging young people to take the step and apply for their preferred programmes.
Across the country, the announcement has been met with excitement and relief. “I honestly thought my dream of studying at UNESWA was over because of my English grade,” said 18-year-old Sinelizwi Dlamini. “I completed my high school last year; I did well in all my other subject but English.
I was planning to redo the subject this year, so when I saw the announcement, I felt like this was my second chance. It means I can still build the future I have always imagined for myself.”
“I passed well in Science subjects, but English pulled me down,” said Thandeka Mkhwanazi, who received her results last week.
“This decision shows that our strengths in core subjects also matter.” Agriculture student hopeful Sibusiso Nkambule shared similar sentiments. “As a country we need more young people in Agriculture.
If we are serious about food security and sustainability, then giving students like me and many others a chance is important.
I am definitely applying with my D grade.” Another UNESWA prospective student, Nomcebo Hlatshwayo, said the news were life changing to her. “I was already looking at other options because I thought I did not qualify. Now I can apply for science. “This gives me hope.”
Education stakeholders have long debated entry requirements and how they impact access to higher learning. While English remains an important subject, many argue that competence in specialised fields such as Mathematics and Physical Science should carry significant weight for programmes rooted in technical knowledge.
With this adjustment, the University of Eswatini appears to be responding to the realities faced by many learners, while still maintaining academic standards within its faculties.
