We all love the idea of a well-equipped kitchen, shiny gadgets, trendy tools, and space-age appliances promising to make life easier. But in reality, many of these tools end up gathering dust in the back of a cupboard, taking up space and adding no real value to your cooking. In a practical kitchen, here are some so-called “essentials” you really don’t need:
- Avocado Slicer
Yes, it looks fancy. But the truth is, all you need is a regular knife and spoon to slice, dice, and scoop an avo. Most people know their way around an avo without a three-part plastic tool that breaks after two uses.
- Banana Slicer
Seriously? A butter knife or even your hands do the job in seconds. A banana slicer is a gimmick and with the price of bananas these days, who’s slicing that many?
- Electric Egg Cooker
A pot of boiling water works just fine, thanks. Whether you're making hard-boiled, soft-boiled, or even medium, no gadget beats a kettle and a stove. Plus, in load shedding? It’s just another plug you can’t use.
- Yoghurt Maker
With all the affordable, locally made yoghurt brands available in our supermarkets, buying an entire machine to make yoghurt is more of a space waster than a money saver. Unless you’re running a farm or a food blog, this one can go.
- Herb Scissors
They sound useful but are a pain to clean. A sharp kitchen knife does the job just as quickly and with fewer awkward angles.
- Electric Can Opener
Unless you have a physical condition that makes manual tools difficult to use, electric can openers are bulky, clumsy, and completely unnecessary. A compact manual opener does the job faster and takes up way less space.
- Cupcake Maker
Who has space for an appliance that only does one thing? Your oven works just as well, and you can bake more than just six at a time. Plus, fewer parts to wash!
- Egg Separator
A tool designed solely to separate egg whites from yolks? Just crack the egg and pass the yolk between the shell halves. Or even better, use your clean hands. Simple, quick, and no plastic waste.
Most kitchens are about flavour, family and function not clutter. Save your money for quality knives, durable pots, and ingredients that matter. The fewer unnecessary gadgets, the more space for what really counts: good food and good company.
