The foundation of good health often begins at your feet. Choosing the right shoes is not merely a matter of style, but a crucial decision that affects posture, comfort and injury prevention. This guide offers a structured approach to selecting shoes that support your individual foot type and lifestyle.

Understand your foot type

  • Determine whether you have flat feet (low arches), neutral arches, or high arches:
  • Flat feet require shoes with strong arch support and stability to prevent over pronation.
  • Neutral arches benefit from moderate cushioning and structured support.
  • High arches need cushioned shoes to absorb impact and reduce supination.

Get accurate measurements

  • Measure your feet while standing, ideally in the late afternoon when swelling is most likely. Always fit shoes to your larger foot and remember sizing can vary across brands.
  • Prioritise fit and structure
  • Ensure about ½ inch of space between your longest toe and the shoe tip. A roomy toe box prevents compression, while a snug heel counter enhances stability. Shoes should bend at the ball of the foot; not twist or collapse entirely.

Match footwear to activity

  • Running: Lightweight, cushioned
  • Walking: Supportive heel, good padding
  • Hiking: Durable with grip
  • Standing work: Supportive with shock absorption

Consider materials and breathability

Opt for breathable, durable fabrics like mesh, leather, or synthetic blends. Proper ventilation reduces the risk of fungal infections.

Replace worn shoes

Footwear typically lasts 600–800km. Worn-out cushioning and tread can contribute to pain or injury.

Specialist shoe types:

  • Antipronatory (for flat feet): Offer medial support and firm structure.
  • Antisupinatory (for high arches): Emphasise cushioning and flexibility.

Quick fit checklist

  • Match to foot type and activity
  • Try on with usual socks, in the afternoon
  • Walk around, comfort should be instant
  • Look for arch support, heel control and proper toe room
  • When to seek expert help

Persistent foot pain? A podiatrist can assess gait, provide custom orthotics and recommend corrective shoes.

Choosing the right shoes protects your feet today and your health tomorrow.
