On Thursday October 30, 2025, the Ministry of Housing and Urban Development joined the global community in commemorating World Cities Day at Esibayeni Lodge in Matsapha, under the theme ‘People-Centred Smart Cities’.
The event also marked the conclusion of Urban October, a month dedicated to promoting sustainable urban development. The gathering brought together key stakeholders, including representatives from municipalities, town boards and town councils, all united in advancing Eswatini’s urban agenda.
The theme, ‘People-Centred Smart Cities’, highlights that true progress goes beyond technological innovation, it is about fostering inclusive, resilient and sustainable urban environments through participatory governance, evidence-based decision-making and integrated urban systems.
In his keynote address, Minister Appolo Maphalala emphasised that technology should serve people, not overshadow them. “For too long, the concept of a ‘Smart City’ has focused on technology rather than humanity,” he said. “Our vision is one where innovation enhances dignity, equity and opportunity for every resident.”
The minister underscored the importance of digital inclusion, linking the ministry’s technological transformation efforts to its core mission of providing quality urban services for all.
He reaffirmed government’s commitment . bridging the digital divide through affordable connectivity and digital literacy programmes, describing them as ‘the foundation of civic participation and economic opportunity’.
Minister Maphalala also highlighted the role of participatory governance, urging citizens to become active co-creators in shaping their neighbourhoods through co-design and feedback platforms.
He further outlined plans for resilient infrastructure, including intelligent traffic systems and sensor-based utilities aimed at improving quality of life and sustainability.
Concluding his remarks, the minister called for a renewed social contract built on trust, transparency and ethical data governance, reaffirming Eswatini’s commitment to cities that are inclusive, safe, resilient and sustainable for all.
