Turning setbacks into sustainable growth

From the quiet community of Kaphunga, Eswatini, emerges a story of resilience, purpose and determination. Our Farmer of the Week, Noxolo Nkambule, is proof that with the right mindset and commitment, adversity can become the seed for opportunity.

From job loss to new beginnings

Nkambule’s broiler farming journey began after she lost her job, a moment that could have marked uncertainty, but instead sparked transformation.

Determined to remain productive while sustaining herself financially, she turned to broiler farming as a practical solution.

What started as a way to stay busy quickly grew into a meaningful enterprise that now serves her community with affordable poultry. “Broiler farming gave me purpose again,” she explains. “It allowed me to support myself while meeting a real need in my community.”

Growing knowledge, growing vision

As she reflects on 2025, Nkambule says what stands out most is her growth in knowledge, particularly in sustainable farming practices. Through continuous learning, including training from the Woman Farmer Foundation, she has sharpened her skills and strengthened her confidence as a farmer. Looking ahead, the year is about improving production systems, strengthening markets and laying the groundwork for expansion.

Inside the broiler operation

Currently, she produces 200 broilers per cycle. Her birds are housed in a structure available at her home, carefully adapted for broiler production.

To ensure the birds are kept warm, especially during early stages, she uses infrared lights and a wooden stove. While the setup offers basic protection, she has clear plans to upgrade her housing as the business grows.

Building markets from the ground up

Nkambule has already secured a strong market within her community. She sells her broilers through WhatsApp, Facebook and word of mouth, offering customers the option of dressed or live chickens, depending on their preference.

Her ambition, however, stretches beyond the local market. “My long-term goal is to supply butcheries and supermarkets in town,” she says.
