Moving from self-reliance to a committed life of faith marks a deep internal shift. It begins when an individual recognises the limitations of their own strength and chooses to surrender their path to the Almighty. By trading personal control for divine guidance, our feature this week shares how Terrence Khumalo discovered a resilient source of peace and found true meaning and strength through an unwavering relationship with Christ.
Khumalo was raised at Mnyokane during his primary years before moving to Matsapha for high school. Currently residing at Kwaluseni, he is pursuing a Bachelor’s Degree in Information Science at the University of Eswatini. While his academic path is important, Khumalo defines himself primarily through his faith, identifies as born-again and draws his ideritity from the principles found in Romans 10:9-10.
His first encounter with God occurred in mid-2017. Having recently finished high school, Khumalo found himself academically redundant and facing an uncertain future. This period of stagnation provided him with the time to attend nearly every service at his church, including weekly healing and Bible school sessions. During this time, his spiritual father emphasised the necessity of a personal relationship with Jesus Christ, cautioning against approaching God only as a solution to temporary problems.
The turning point arrived one Wednesday afternoon following a teaching on standing against the devil. The message highlighted that a believer’s boldness stems solely from standing with God in Christ. Though Khumalo had long desired to live a pure life, he found himself repeatedly failing despite his best intentions. Reflecting on his life that day, he felt he was failing at everything, except sinning.
“Convicted by the Holy Spirit, I decided to stop relying on my own strength. I surrendered my life to Jesus Christ, choosing to depend fully on Him for guidance and the ability to live righteously,” Khumalo testifies. “I confessed Jesus as Lord and believed in the resurrection with my heart. From that moment, I developed a habit of sharing everything with God – from frustrating habits to my greatest ambitions. This transparency allowed me to receive the strength to overcome challenges and achieve my goals, discovering that God provides exactly what is needed when we acknowledge our own inability,” he adds.
Over the years, Khumalo’s devotion has evolved from a search for meaning into a response to God’s love. He realised that this love, demonstrated through the death of Jesus on the cross, is available to everyone. He finds encouragement in 1 Timothy 2:3-4, which states that God desires all men to be saved and to come to the knowledge of the truth. Furthermore, Romans 5:8 serves as a reminder that God demonstrated His love by sending Christ to die for humanity while we were still sinners. Khumalo considers surrendering to God the wisest decision of his life. He has found that God leads him not only beside still waters, but also through the darkest valleys. To those struggling, he points to Isaiah 40:29, noting that God gives power to the weak and increases strength to those with no might. To those without faith, he references Ecclesiastes, suggesting that a life without the Creator is ultimately vanity. For Khumalo, eternity is the ultimate reality, and he believes that a life found in Christ is the only path to true meaning.
