The world is filled with diversity, and the classroom is no exception. From different academic skills to different physical and cognitive abilities, the classroom is a diverse environment with varied learning needs. It is vital that the educators and learners recognise the diversity and deal with the learning needs appropriately.
Speaking to secondary school teacher, Nozipho Dlamini, she said: “As a teacher, you need to be able to manage the needs of your learners and know their strengths and weaknesses, focusing on their different learning abilities and manage them wisely in order to ensure that all of them have an equal opportunity to succeed.
“You can do this by creating a learning environment that is inclusive and supportive of all learners, regardless of their background or needs, never make a child feel like they are different for whatever reason; this can disturb their learning and love for school as a whole.”
Dlamini went on to add that dealing with children can be trying but schools and teachers can manage the needs of their diverse learners by:
Creating an inclusive classroom culture
By creating a classroom environment where all learners feel safe, respected and valued. Teachers can do this by promoting mutual respect, by acknowledging differences and using inclusive language and by avoiding hurtful language that excludes learners based on their social identity.
Using differentiated instruction
This means adapting teaching methods and materials to meet the individual needs of all learners. Teachers can do this by providing learners with different options for how they learn, by providing support to learners who need it and by challenging learners who are ready for it.
Providing additional support to learners who need it
This could include providing learners with extra help in class, providing them with tutoring or other support services outside of class, or developing individualised education plans for learners with special needs.
Working with parents and families
Parents and families play an important role in their children’s education. Schools can work with parents and families to support their children’s learning at home and to provide them with information and resources.
By taking these steps, schools can create a learning environment where all learners can thrive and succeed.
