Digital pivot paying off

A true champion is not defined by the absence of failure, but by a refusal to quit. This is the mantra driving Lunga Khumalo, the Founder of CutterzOnline Shop, an Eswatini venture that has successfully seized the digital marketplace to transform a modest student allowance into a thriving e-commerce brand.

Lunga launched the business in October 2016, identifying a gap in the local market for accessible, high-demand footwear.

His ‘digital-first’ model is a masterclass in lean e-commerce: Clients submit images of desired sneakers via social platforms, pay an upfront deposit, and Lunga manages the cross-border logistics to ensure timely delivery.

Seizing digital frontier

While many traditional retailers struggled with the shift to online consumerism, Lunga leaned into it. By bypassing the overheads of a brick-and-mortar storefront, he focused his capital on stock and service. His mission is built on providing international quality at affordable prices–a philosophy heavily influenced by Western retail standards.

“I want to ensure that emaSwati are getting the supply they need,” Lunga explains. He is now strategically using his profits to investigate other lucrative sectors, aiming to build a multi-business portfolio that creates jobs–a vital goal for this socially conscious entrepreneur.

The grit that beat critics

The genesis of CutterzOnline Shop was far from glamorous. Lunga invested his entire first tertiary living allowance and liquidated personal assets, including his laptop, to fund the initial inventory. At the time, his peers treated the idea as a ‘laughing stock,’ meeting his ambition with mockery.

However, backed by the theory from an entrepreneurship module during his university studies, Lunga remained resolute. Today, the rewards are undeniable. CutterzOnline Shop has gained nationwide popularity, boasting nearly 19 000 followers on Facebook and a growing daily order volume that proves the scalability of his digital model.

Leadership and the ‘jovial’ client experience

Lunga describes himself as a leader driven by ethics and a ‘dreamer enthusiastic about a better tomorrow.’ In the impersonal world of online shopping, he has found success by doubling down on the human element. Steady communication and timely delivery are the cornerstones of his operation.

“That is the key technique I use to keep the jovial atmosphere,” he says. “It creates a healthy relationship between us.”

This focus on the client experience has created a feedback loop of positive energy. Lunga also collaborates with a network of fellow entrepreneurs, where they share the skills necessary to navigate the daily complexities of e-commerce in Southern Africa.

From zero to one

Lunga’s drive is deeply personal. Raised in an impoverished family, his initial goal was simply to relieve his mother’s financial burden while he was at university. Instead, the business took a “giant step,” transforming his family’s standard of living—a success he attributes to his faith.

Beyond the balance sheet, he remains committed to philanthropy, providing school shoes and bags to underprivileged children to encourage their education. Currently reading Peter Thiel’s Zero to One, Lunga sees his own journey reflected in the text: the difficult but rewarding path of creating something where nothing existed before. His message to aspiring digital executives is clear: “Everything is possible; it only requires determination, focus, and faith.” In a market often defined by competition and critics, Lunga proves that those who seize the digital moment are the ones who ultimately win.
