Eswatini’s young people are getting a powerful opportunity to step into the world of Artificial Intelligence, thanks to the upcoming International Women’s Day (IWD) Global Techathon 2026.
The University of Eswatini (UNESWA), in partnership with Nubian Smarts and UNESWA AI, will host the two-day innovation event on February 14–15 in Matsapha, bringing global technology learning right to local learners.
The Techathon forms part of the internationally recognised Teens in AI initiative, a global programme active in more than 100 countries.
This year’s theme, ‘Give to Gain,’ highlights the importance of sharing knowledge, mentorship and opportunities to build a more inclusive technology ecosystem, especially for girls and young people from underserved communities.
The Eswatini edition will take the form of a Design Sprint, where learners aged 12 to 18 from across the country will work in teams to tackle real-world challenges using artificial intelligence, data science and design thinking. Importantly, participation is completely free, making the programme accessible to both government and private school learners.
During the event, participants will be introduced to AI fundamentals and ethical technology principles, ensuring they understand not just how to build technology, but how to build it responsibly.
They will also learn structured problem-solving techniques and develop practical solutions linked to the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).
Along the way, they will collaborate with mentors and peers, gaining exposure to teamwork, innovation and critical thinking.
One of the most exciting aspects of the Techathon is that no prior technical experience is required. Curiosity, creativity and a willingness to learn are the only entry requirements.
This opens the door for many young people who may never have imagined themselves in technology-related careers.
The event also builds on the success of the AI4Good Incubator previously hosted at UNESWA, reflecting a growing commitment to developing local AI skills and innovation pathways.
By connecting global expertise with local talent, Eswatini is positioning its youth to be active creators; not just consumers of future technologies.
As the digital world continues to expand, initiatives like this Techathon are shaping a generation ready to lead, innovate and solve problems that matter both at home and on the global stage.
