From home-grown idea to 1 500 hampers

It is often said that the difference between a generic package and a memorable moment lies in the detail. For Nonhlanhla Mkhonta, the Founder of Blooms and Gifts, those details are the building blocks of an empire that began in a living room and now commands a physical warehouse and a formidable corporate client base.

Established in 2020; a year that forced the world to reconsider how we connect, Blooms and Gifts emerged as a bespoke floral and gifting solution. What started as a modest ‘made-to-order’ home operation has blossomed into a structured powerhouse.

In the last year alone, Mkhonta’s team delivered over 1 500 corporate hampers, cementing their reputation as Eswatini’s premier choice for organisations and individuals alike.

Leadership as servanthood

While many CEOs look to the latest Silicon Valley textures for leadership cues, Mkhonta finds her blueprint in a much older text.

“The expectation is probably a self-development book by some famous author,” she says with a smile. “The truth is, I read my Bible.

It has shaped me into the person I am.”

For Mkhonta, the Word of God isn’t just for Sunday; it’s a manual for character building, business wisdom and interpersonal relations. This spiritual foundation informs her ‘hands-on, people-centred’ leadership style. Having served in church, she views the corner office not as a throne, but as a place of service. “Leadership is mainly about servanthood,” she insists.

The Anatomy of the hustle

Aspiring entrepreneurs often see the ‘glamour’ of the executive director title, but Mkhonta is quick to pull back the curtain.

The reality, she says, is a cocktail of responsibility, pressure and relentless decision-making.

’Leadership is not glamorous,’ she warns. “It requires resilience, discipline and continuous learning. The reward isn’t in the title; it’s in building something meaningful and sustainable.”Her drive is fuelled by three pillars: Consistency, faith and a belief in the vision. It is this trifecta that allowed her to scale from single orders to styling major events and providing wholesale floral solutions.

The Philosophy

How does a small business transition into a trendsetter? Mkhonta attributes their success to a few non-negotiable standards:

Radical consistency: Treating every order, whether a single bouquet or a thousand-unit corporate contract, with the same obsession for quality.

The power of listening: In a bespoke industry, the client’s voice is the most important tool. Consistency, reliability, and clear communication are the brand’s hallmarks.

Talent incubation: Mkhonta doesn’t just hire employees; she develops talent.

By celebrating wins and ensuring every team member understands their impact, she instils a contagious positive energy within the warehouse walls.

Beyond the flowers

For Mkhonta, Blooms and Gifts is still in its ‘beginning’ phase. Her vision stretches far beyond floral arrangements; she aims to create a business ecosystem.

“We are still aiming at creating not just more jobs, but more business opportunities for other businesses to showcase their products,” she explains.

It is a legacy-focused approach to the hustle. In a market often saturated with get-rich-quick schemes, Mkhonta is proving that when you plant seeds of faith, discipline and genuine service, the harvest is not just a successful business, it’s a transformed community.
