For this week’s Featured Drive, we shine the spotlight on Masibulele Mkhonta, a young motoring enthusiast from Mbabane, Mpolonjeni, whose journey with his car is rooted deeply in childhood dreams and a growing passion for automotive creativity. Masibulele is the proud owner of a 2007 Golf 1, a vehicle that has long held a special place in his heart. Like many car lovers, his appreciation for this classic model began at a young age. Years later that admiration transformed into ownership when he finally acquired the car in 2024 marking a personal milestone and the fulfilment of a long-held dream.

Interestingly, the car does not yet have a formal nickname. Instead, it is affectionately referred to by its number plate, ‘625’. While many enthusiasts are quick to christen their vehicles with bold names, Masibulele is content to let the car’s identity evolve naturally. As he puts it, ‘time will tell’, a sentiment that reflects both patience and vision for what lies ahead.

Finished in a sleek black colour, the Golf 1 carries a clean and understated presence on the road. Under the bonnet, it runs on an ADY engine, offering reliability and performance that perfectly complement Masibulele’s plans for gradual modification.

What he loves most about the car is not just how it drives, but the freedom to be creative with it. The Golf 1 is widely known as a canvas for expression and Masibulele is excited by the endless possibilities it offers. While he admits there is nothing particularly unique about the car just yet, the journey has only just begun.

For Masibulele, this Golf 1 is more than a means of transport. It is a symbol of growth, patience and passion, proof that sometimes, dreams really do come with four wheels.
