Fitness motivation often begins with a simple decision, the choice to show up for yourself even when it feels uncomfortable.

For many young people, the gym can be intimidating and the idea of healthy living overwhelming. Yet true transformation is not built overnight. It grows from small, consistent efforts that eventually shape both body and mind.  This column shines a light on individuals who are redefining what vitality looks like, proving that dedication can make you look and feel beyond your years.

Nicklaus Micheal Steenkamp is one such example. He shared that his fitness journey began while he was in Grade VII at Salesian Primary School. At the time, he admitted he was not consistent because exercising was new to him.

He had no knowledge of proper gym techniques or diet planning. However, he explained that instead of giving up, he chose to educate himself step by step, learning the basics of training and gradually improving his understanding of health and fitness.

Steenkamp revealed that his motivation to prioritise his health was influenced by the many illnesses affecting people around him. He observed how constant weather changes often left individuals vulnerable to sickness. These factors, he said, pushed him to commit to a lifestyle that would strengthen his immune system and overall well-being. Since then, living healthily has become a non-negotiable part of his life.

According to him, his training routine includes jogging, weightlifting and body weight exercises. Jogging helps him burn excess body fat and improve his cardiovascular endurance.

Weightlifting allows him to build lean muscle, while strengthening his joints and improving agility. Body weight exercises such as push ups, sit ups, crunches and squats enhance his strength and explosive reflexes.

While he does not follow a strict diet plan, he stated that he avoids excessive fatty foods because they lead to bloating and unnecessary fat gain. He emphasised that consistency remains his greatest secret.

Regardless of the weather or situation, he ensures he shows up at the gym. He added that pushing himself to his limits, combined with adequate rest for muscle recovery, has delivered remarkable results.

He highlighted benefits such as improved digestion, better posture, enhanced mental clarity, increased energy levels and reduced stress.  At 21 years old, Steenkamp proves that discipline, not age, defines how young you feel.
