A battle of words is set to take centre stage as Eswatini’s brightest young minds prepare to spell their way to the top in a national competition that promises to test skill, confidence and passion for language.

High school learners across Eswatini are being called to take centre stage in the upcoming Eswatini Spelling Bee Competition, an initiative aimed at nurturing academic excellence, confidence and a love for language among the youth.

Targeting learners aged 15 to 17, the competition is open to both individual participants and school representatives, offering a national platform for young minds to demonstrate their spelling prowess.

More than just a contest, the spelling bee is designed to strengthen vocabulary, enhance communication skills and instil confidence that extends beyond the classroom.

The competition will be held across multiple centres to ensure accessibility for participants from all regions of the country.

These include:

  • Mbabane
  • Manzini
  • Pigg’s Peak
  • Siteki
  • Siphofaneni and
  • Nhlangano

Through a series of elimination rounds, contestants will battle it out for a place in the grand finale, scheduled for July 3 in Manzini.

Organisers emphasise that the initiative goes beyond spelling accuracy. It seeks to promote a culture of reading, critical thinking and self-expression among young people; skills that are increasingly important in today’s fast-changing world. By encouraging learners to engage with words and language at a deeper level, the competition aims to contribute meaningfully to educational development in the country.

Participants who register will receive an official word list to guide their preparation, giving them an opportunity to sharpen their skills ahead of the contest. For many learners, the spelling bee presents a unique chance to represent their schools and regions while gaining valuable exposure and experience.

In addition to fostering healthy competition, the event also serves as a confidence-building platform where learners can challenge themselves and interact with peers who share similar academic interests.

Registration is currently open and learners are encouraged to sign up early to begin their preparation.  Interested participants and schools can make enquiries or register by contacting 7857 4327 or 7920 9244.

Registration can also be completed in person at Office #28, LM Building, along Gwamile Street in Mbabane. As anticipation builds, the Eswatini Spelling Bee Competition promises to be a celebration of talent, determination, and the power of words, offering young learners a moment to shine on a national stage.
