Hosting the game: 6 crowd-pleasing world cup snacks

When the World Cup is on, nobody wants to spend the entire match stuck in the kitchen. The best game-day snacks are simple, filling and easy to share.

Here are six crowd-pleasing options that even the most kitchen-shy guys can prepare with confidence.

1. Loaded Nachos

Ingredients

1 large bag tortilla chips

2 cups grated cheddar cheese

2 tomatoes, diced

1 small onion, finely chopped

1 jalapeño (optional), sliced

Salsa, guacamole or sour cream for serving

Method

  • Preheat oven to 180°C. Spread tortilla chips on a baking tray.
  • Sprinkle cheese evenly over the chips.
  • Add tomatoes, onion and jalapeños. Bake for 8-10 minutes until the cheese melts.
  • Serve immediately with salsa, guacamole or sour cream.

 

2. Sticky BBQ Chicken Wings

Ingredients

1kg chicken wings

1 tablespoon paprika

1 teaspoon garlic powder

1 teaspoon salt

½ teaspoon black pepper

½ cup barbecue sauce

Method

  • Preheat oven to 200°C. Toss wings with paprika, garlic powder, salt and pepper.
  • Arrange on a baking tray and bake for 35-40 minutes. Remove from oven and coat with barbecue sauce.
  • Return to the oven for 5 minutes. Serve hot.

 

3. Mini Boerewors Rolls

Ingredients

500g boerewors

6 hot dog rolls or small bread rolls

1 onion, sliced

1 tablespoon cooking oil

Tomato sauce and mustard

Method

  • Fry or grill the boerewors until cooked through. In a pan, fry onions until soft and golden.
  • Slice the boerewors into small pieces. Fill the rolls with boerewors and onions.
  • Add tomato sauce and mustard. Cut into smaller portions for easy sharing.

 

4. Easy Cheese and Cracker Platter

Ingredients

1 packet crackers

250g cheddar cheese, cubed

100g sliced salami or ham

1 bunch grapes

1 small jar olives

Method

  • Arrange crackers around a serving board. Add cheese cubes, salami, grapes and olives.
  • Serve immediately. No cooking required.

 

5. Crispy Potato Wedges

Ingredients

4 large potatoes

2 tablespoons cooking oil

1 teaspoon paprika

1 teaspoon garlic powder

Salt and pepper to taste

Method

  • Preheat oven to 200°C. Wash potatoes and cut into wedges.
  • Toss with oil, paprika, garlic powder, salt and pepper. Spread on a baking tray.
  • Bake for 35-40 minutes, turning halfway through. Serve with tomato sauce or garlic mayonnaise.

 

6. Chicken Mayo Toasted Sandwich Triangles

Ingredients

8 slices bread

2 cups cooked chicken, shredded

3 tablespoons mayonnaise

1 tablespoon chopped parsley (optional)

Salt and pepper to taste

Butter for toasting

Method

  • Mix chicken, mayonnaise, parsley, salt and pepper. Spread the mixture onto bread slices.
  • Close sandwiches and butter the outsides lightly. Toast in a pan or sandwich maker until golden.
  • Cut each sandwich into four triangles. Serve warm.

 

Bonus Match-Day Dip: Creamy Garlic Dip

Ingredients

½ cup mayonnaise

2 cloves garlic, crushed

1 teaspoon lemon juice

Pinch of salt

Method

Mix all ingredients in a bowl.

Chill for 15 minutes.

Serve with wedges, wings or crackers.

 

Game-day tip

Prepare as much as possible before kick-off. That way, you can enjoy the action with your guests instead of missing goals while rushing between the kitchen and the television. After all, great football is even better when accompanied by good food and good company.
