For one local Gospel artist, the journey of faith began in the quiet simplicity of a rural childhood, where church was not just a weekly routine but a way of life. In today’s world where many people are searching for identity, purpose and meaning, Londiwe Kunene’s story stands as a reminder that some of life’s most powerful encounters begin in the simplest of places.
Raised in a Christian home, Kunene recalls a childhood deeply rooted in prayer, Bible reading and worship. “I don’t remember a time when God wasn’t spoken about in our home,” she said. Among her earliest memories is standing with the children’s choir every Sunday, singing with her eyes closed and heart fully engaged.
Among her earliest memories, singing stands out the most. Even as a child, worship became her safe space and deepest joy. “Every Sunday, I would stand with the children’s choir, eyes closed, singing with all my heart. Something inside me always felt alive and close to God whenever I sang,” she recalled.
Her personal encounter with God came at the age of 13 during a Sunday school service led by Pastor Z Masuku. It was during the reading of Revelation 3:20 that something shifted within her heart. “I remember feeling like God was speaking directly to me. I realised that Jesus was knocking at the door of my heart, waiting for me to open it. That day, I decided to invite Him in personally,” she said. From that moment, her faith became personal and deeply rooted, no longer just something inherited from her family.
Soon after this defining moment, her family relocated from the rural village to town, exposing her to new environments, pressures and influences. The transition was not always easy, but her encounter with God remained her anchor. “There were times I struggled to fit in and stay grounded in my faith. But whenever life felt overwhelming, I would go back to singing. Worship kept me connected to God,” she said.
Today, at 33, Kunene is a recording artist who has recently completed a live recording, with new music expected to be released soon.
What began as a childhood passion has now grown into a full expression of her calling and creative journey.
Beyond music, she is also thriving in business, where she sells cars for a living. She attributes her success entirely to God’s favour and guidance. “God has been faithful in every area of my life. Even in my business, I can see His hand. I sell cars, and everything I have achieved is because of Him opening doors,” she said.
Looking back, Kunene remains deeply grateful for her upbringing, her early encounter with God and the scripture that marked her life forever. “I see now that God has always been with me. From that Sunday school moment at 13, He was gently calling me. I simply opened the door,” she said.
For her, the message of her journey is simple yet powerful. “God meets us where we are, often through what we already love. For me, it has always been singing,” she concluded.
