MBABANE-Eswatini international attacking midfielder Sizwe Gwebu’s future with Uganda Police hangs in the balance if reports surrounding his name are anything to go by.
The other international players, such as Lindo ‘Bhabhalazi’ Mkhonta with ZESCO United and Chippa United forward Justice ‘Figa’ Figuareido have already reported to their respective clubs for pre-season. However, allegations indicate that Gwebu remains in the country and is not seeing eye to eye with his club. He should have returned to Uganda over a week ago to resume his duties. It is alleged that there was a breach of contract from the Uganda Police of an outstanding salary of five months.
Gwebu confirmed that he was still in Eswatini.
“It is true that I have not returned to Uganda. I am still weighing my next move. I am doubtful of returning to Uganda,” he said.
Gwebu penned a two-year deal with the side marking his first professional international move. He has already completed a season there.
He has made a name for himself in Uganda, often making the starting line-up for his side. Gwebu boasts a minimum two assists since arrival at the side last year.
By International Federation of Association Football (FIFA) laws, a player’s contract can be cancelled allowing them to join any team of their choice should his club fail to fulfil its contractual obligations for three months.
In April this year, Gwebu’s European dream was dimmed following a failed switch to Armenia. The Eswatini pacey attacking midfielder missed out on a potential move which would have launched his overseas career.
Gwebu had been expected to attend trials in Armenia with FC Van after receiving an invite, but the opportunity failed to materialise.
The trial period was expected to take place from March 10 and conclude on April 9, 2026. This was attributed to reports indicating his team could not grant him permission for the same.
Officially known as the Republic of Armenia, it is a State located in Eurasia’s South Caucasus region. The physical location of Armenia has led to plenty of questions about whether the nation is part of Europe or Asia.
Meanwhile, in February 2026 SABC Sport reported that Serbian striker Samir Nurkovic had opened disciplinary proceedings against the South African Football Association (SAFA) and the Premier Soccer League (PSL), demanding payment of E15 million in outstanding wages, following Royal AM’s expulsion. The Serbian forward, reportedly argued that the two organisations failed to enforce a series of final and binding FIFA and Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS) ruling,s issued between 2023 and 2025 ordering Royal AM to settle the debt before the club ceased operations.
UgandaPolice finished in position seven of the last Uganda Premier League standings. They accumulated 47 points from 30 games.
Gwebu’s rise began at Moneni Pirates, where he emerged during the 2022/23 season under Zimbabwean mentor Ikabort Masocha. Donning the iconic number 10 jersey last term, his appearances later became sporadic, though his quality had already caught the eye of national selectors.
