The Land Cruiser 300 HEV proves electrification isn’t just for city SUVs, delivering record-breaking power, improved efficiency and the same legendary capability that has defined the icon for more than 70 years.
For decades, the Toyota Land Cruiser has built its reputation in places where roads disappear, rivers become crossings and reliability is measured in survival rather than comfort. Now, one of the world’s toughest SUVs is embracing electrification without compromising the rugged DNA that made it legendary.
Toyota South Africa Motors has introduced the new Land Cruiser 300 Hybrid Electric Vehicle (HEV), creating the most powerful Land Cruiser ever produced while proving that hybrid technology can be just as capable in the wilderness as it is on the highway.
The king embraces hybrid power
Rather than replacing its trusted diesel models, Toyota has expanded the Land Cruiser family, giving buyers more choice. The new 3.5-litre twin-turbo petrol hybrid joins the existing 3.3-litre diesel range, with the premium ZX now offered exclusively as a hybrid, while the adventure-focused GR-S HEV will arrive later this year alongside the diesel GX-R and GR-S models.
The most powerful land cruiser ever
At the heart of the newcomer is a 3.5-litre twin-turbo V6 petrol engine working together with Toyota’s compact hybrid system. The combination produces an impressive 341kW and 790Nm through a 10-speed automatic transmission, making it the most powerful Land Cruiser to date.
More power, better efficiency
The extra performance is matched by greater efficiency. Toyota says the hybrid consumes just 10 litres per 100 kilometres, improving fuel economy over comparable petrol-powered models while delivering instant acceleration thanks to the electric motor’s immediate torque.
Built for adventure beyond the road
The hybrid system also introduces a practical feature aimed at adventurers and outdoor enthusiasts. A waterproof AC inverter mounted beneath the centre console provides up to 1 500W of external power, allowing owners to operate camping equipment, electrical appliances or even serve as an emergency power source during power outages or disasters.
Fresh looks, premium comfort
While the powertrain headlines the changes, Toyota has also refreshed the Land Cruiser’s appearance. Two new exterior colours, Magnetite Black and Classic White, join the range, while colour availability has been revised across GX-R, ZX and GR-S models. The cabin also receives updated interior trim combinations that further elevate the premium feel.
According to Glenn Crompton, Vice President of Marketing at Toyota South Africa Motors, the Land Cruiser has long been trusted by families, explorers, conservationists and businesses. He says the new hybrid allows customers to enjoy electrified performance without sacrificing the capability that has defined the nameplate for generations.

The Land Cruiser 300 is backed by a 3-year/100 000 km warranty and a 9-services/90 000 km service plan, with service intervals of 10 000 km. The HEV battery is covered by an 8-year/160 000 km battery warranty.
