The Crescent Shopping Centre recently transformed into a vibrant hub of cultural exchange last week Saturday, as Luxy Garden and the Embassy of the Republic of China (Taiwan) hosted the eagerly-anticipated Asian Food Fair & Taiwan Day 2026. The lively event brought together communities, flavours and traditions, creating a remarkable celebration of the enduring friendship and diplomatic ties between Taiwan and Eswatini.

The festivities commenced with an address from Kathy Shu-Kai Liu, Commissioner of the Overseas Community Affairs Council. Expressing her gratitude to the enthusiastic turnout, Commissioner Liu emphasised that the gathering was designed to honour Asian heritage while strengthening bilateral bonds. She encouraged visitors to explore the wide array of stalls and fully immerse themselves in the day’s rich programme.

Commissioner Liu then introduced Ezulwini Indvuna Yenkhundla, Sifiso ‘Mashampu’ Khumalo. In his remarks, Indvuna Khumalo expressed appreciation for the invitation and reflected on a momentous week for Taiwan’s diplomatic mission. He acknowledged Taiwan’s Ambassador to Eswatini, Ching-Lin Tsuei, noting that the celebrations followed closely on the heels of Taiwan National Day last week Wednesday and a presentation of credentials before His Majesty the King last Thursday. Khumalo underscored that the day’s events served as a true testament to two cultures uniting in harmony.

A major highlight of the afternoon was the high-energy entertainment line-up. Attendees were treated to thrilling performances of drum wars, alongside traditional lion and dragon dances by the ACC. The cultural showcase also featured a mesmerising Taiwanese Indigenous Dance and an electrifying K-Pop routine delivered by Waterford students, which captivated the younger members of the audience.

Culinary and artistic flair took centre stage when Luxy Garden hosted an interactive sushi chef masterclass.  The audience enjoyed a live tutorial on crafting sushi rolls, followed by an engaging question-and-answer session.

Meanwhile, the fashion runway came alive with a spectacular showcase blending style, creativity and cross-border inspiration. Featuring stunning looks and confident models, the fashion show celebrated culturally inspired apparel that bridged Asian aesthetics with local flair.

Surrounding the central stage, a bustling marketplace of stalls offered a plethora of artisanal goods, unique clothing, intricate crocheted items and an array of authentic Asian foods and beverages. Taiwan Day 2026 proved to be an unforgettable showcase of community spirit, proving once again that food, art and shared traditions form the strongest bridges between nations.
