MBABANE – Construction of the game-changing Mpakeni Dam under the MNWAP has officially passed the 31 per cent completion mark, signalling significant progress in one of Eswatini’s most ambitious water infrastructure projects.

Driven by the Eswatini Water and Agricultural Development Enterprise (EWADE), the project is not only transforming the landscape of Shiselweni, but also setting new standards in infrastructure delivery and national empowerment.

According to Project Resident Engineer Valey Vilane, these landmarks have been achieved despite early setbacks ranging from abnormal rainfall, material shortages and protracted labour disputes, construction contractor Sakhalive Joint Venture, a consortium between Chinese engineering giants Sinohydro and Yellow River, has delivered critical milestones ahead of schedule and within budget.

Their performance is part of a broader Mkhondvo – Ngwavuma Water Augmentation Programme (MNWAP) vision spearheaded by EWADE to ensure water security, agricultural transformation and socio-economic upliftment.

Among the most notable milestones is the successful completion of the permanent camp, comprising employer and engineer offices, which was delivered within a scheduled 124-day window, From February 1 – September 12, 2024, without cost overruns, Vilane told the Times Business Desk.

Vilane went on to disclose that another landmark achievement was the early completion and commissioning of the diversion channel, using over 40 000 cubic metres of concrete.

Originally due by June 30, water was successfully diverted through the channel on June 26, 2025, four days ahead of schedule.

“These milestones are enabling seamless work on core dam structures. Currently, spillway excavation is over 50 per cent complete, the diaphragm wall, a critical seepage control feature is at 36 per cent completion and it is being installed under technically challenging geological conditions,” Vilane said.

Meanwhile, EWADE’s technical leadership has ensured the integrity of timelines and quality control, with its engineers providing continuous supervision and mentoring.
