MBABANE – Correctional Sunrise and the Royal Eswatini Police Services (REPS) were crowned champions of the Phoenix Volleyball Galore Season Three on Sunday.
This capped a thrilling tournament that showcased the rising standard of volleyball in Eswatini, where the competition, held across two venues before culminating at the Mavuso Sports Centre Hall, delivered top action and moments of brilliance.
In the women’s category, Correctional Sunrise produced a commanding performance against REPS, securing a resounding 3-0 victory in a one-sided affair.
Their dominance was evident from the outset, with precise attacks and robust defence earning them the trophy, gold medals and a E4 000 prize.
The display underlined their preparation and cohesion, setting a high benchmark for the tournament.
In the men’s final, REPS edged out Bob Cats in a closely-contested four-set battle and concluded with a 3-1 score.
Their tactical discipline and resilience secured them the title, gold medals and the same E4 000 prize as their female counterparts.
The match highlighted the competitive depth in the men’s category, with REPS proving their mettle against a formidable opponent.
The tournament’s quality was a talking point, with Nobuhle Dlamini, a member of the organising team and former Secretary General of the Eswatini National Volleyball Association (ENVA), praising the marked improvement in play.
“The competition has progressed significantly. You can see the teams have been training diligently. A new team, Eco Water, joined the association this year and competed in the National First Division (NFD). Their third-place play-off appearance speaks volumes about the tournament’s quality,” Dlamini remarked.
She attributed the elevated standard to increased player motivation, noting the introduction of Most Valuable Player (MVP) awards for each participating team as a key factor in driving performance.
ENVA President Eric Gama echoed Dlamini’s sentiments, expressing gratitude to the Phoenix Volleyball Club for hosting a tournament of such magnitude.
