MBABANE – Eswatini’s premier knockout competition, the Ingwenyama Cup, has returned to the sporting calendar with a flourish.

At a glitzy launch held yesterday at the sponsor, Sincephetelo Motor Vehicle Accidents Fund (SMVAF), offices, the eighth edition was officially unveiled under the slogan ‘Itintile’ – a nod to the tournament’s firmly established roots in the nation’s heart.

While the festivities celebrated the unique fusion of football and culture, the Last 32 draw stole the spotlight, delivering a daunting set of opening fixtures for the country’s ‘Big Three’.

The draw has set the stage for potential giant-killings, with Mbabane Swallows, Mbabane Highlanders and the returning Manzini Wanderers all handed treacherous starts. Highlanders face a haunting reunion with National First Division (NFD) side Lozitha Spurs. The ‘Black Bull’ will be wary of their unpredictable opponents, who famously dumped them out of the previous edition with a 2-1 first-round victory.

There were equally loud gasps when Manzini Wanderers – the Premier League table-proppers making a sentimental return after a year in the ‘wilderness’ due to legal disputes – were drawn against high-flying Madlenya. The NFD outfit previously eliminated the ‘Weslians’ on penalties in the 2024 edition Last 16, adding a layer of revenge to this year’s encounter.

Mbabane Swallows were the first big name out of the hat. They face the relatively unknown Richmond Aces from Lubombo, a side that will undoubtedly view the fixture as the ultimate platform to prove their mettle against one of the league’s titans.

The tournament, which features 32 teams from the Premier League, NFD and regional leagues, remains a multi-million-emalangeni spectacle. Again this year, the football champions are set to pocket E1 450 000.
