MBABANE – A surge of interest at the Optimistic Generation Forever (OGF) orientation in Manzini has prompted organisers to double their intake, enrolling 27 aspiring actors into the fold.
The expansion follows an unexpected high turnout at the Eswatini National Council of Arts and Culture headquarters. What was originally envisioned as a select call for 12 performers, evolved into a full-scale recruitment drive as every participant demonstrated remarkable commitment and a readiness to learn.
OGF Communications Officer Mbhekseni Lukhele described the session as an energetic and inspiring gathering, rather than a cut-throat competition. He explained that the exercise prioritised raw potential and genuine interest over the rigid structures of formal auditions. “The orientation was super amazing. I can say it was not auditions but a call for interested actors and actresses who have a passion for acting and need mentorship to join the theatre group,” Lukhele noted.
While the group initially intended to shortlist a dozen candidates, they chose to welcome all 27 attendees, moved by the determination on display. Lukhele confirmed that rehearsals are already underway as the ensemble prepares for a production scheduled for March. He emphasised that the decision to include every hopeful was driven by their palpable enthusiasm and hunger to perform. “We needed 12 actors but we ended up with 27, which is a very impressive number to get going with the project, and we accepted everyone because they showed hunger for the opportunity,” he stated.
Participants shared this optimism, viewing the programme as a vital platform for creative and professional growth. Performer Theresa Mdluli said the experience affirmed her ambitions and bolstered her confidence. “I am grateful to be part of the group because it is more than just a blessing, it is where we express our art and showcase our talent to the world,” she said.
The intake marks a substantial breakthrough in OGF’s revival of its theatre wing. Known for staging high-quality productions, the organisation remains a cornerstone for mentoring emerging talent aged 14 to 35.
