PIGG’S PEAK – The drought is finally over.

Mbabane Swallows finally exorcised the demons that have haunted their campaign for nearly two months. For 56 long days, the ‘Beautiful Birds’ had forgotten the sensation of flight, failing to register a single league victory since their January triumph over Nsingizini Hotspurs. Yesterday afternoon at the Killarney Sports Ground, that psychological weight was finally lifted as Sizolwethu ‘Nunu’ Shabalala emerged as the hero to secure a vital 2-0 win over Rangers.

The stakes could not have been higher for the capital giants. Sitting a precarious two points above the relegation zone at kick-off, Swallows entered round 21 of the MTN Premier League looking for more than just points; they were looking for their identity. Forced into changes following injuries to Njongo Mazibuko and Mancoba ‘Nciba’ Vilakati, the home team welcomed back the pace of Bongi Magagula to a side desperate to avenge a 2-0 defeat suffered against the same opposition earlier this season.

Rangers, flying high in the top five and chasing a historic top-four finish, provided a stern test of nerves. The first half was a cagey affair defined by tactical discipline rather than clinical finishing. While Swallows controlled the early exchanges and kept Rangers’ goalkeeper Bafana Ngwenya occupied, the final ball lacked the necessary conviction. At the interval, the scoreline remained blank, and the 56-day curse seemed to loom larger than ever over the home supporters.

The second half ignited with a newfound intensity. Rangers nearly silenced the Swallows faithful in the 57th minute when Nkosinathi Ndwandwe exploited a rare lapse in the Swallows defence, but his effort whistled agonisingly wide of the upright. The match took a sombre turn on the hour mark when Rangers’ Simiso Dlamini was stretchered off with a serious injury, forcing the introduction of veteran Sihlangu Mkhwanazi.

As the clock ticked down, the breakthrough finally arrived in the 77th minute. A trademark long throw-in from ‘Karas’ caused chaos in the Rangers penalty area, and it was ‘Nunu’ Shabalala who reacted quickest, squeezing the ball home with a poaching tap-in. In a moment of pure sporting theatre, the heavens opened immediately following the goal. As rain lashed down on the Killarney turf, it felt like a literal manifestation of the club’s Ukhona Uzonethwa tagline—a cleansing of the recent struggles.
