Every parent wants their child to feel safe and confident at school, but bullying can sometimes shake that sense of security. Teaching your child how to stand up to bullies is about more than just defending themselves, it’s about building resilience, self-respect and kindness.

Giving your child the tools to handle these situations can empower them to face challenges with courage and grow stronger in the process. The Kids Health publication mentions that when a child tells you about being bullied, listen calmly and offer comfort and support. It is stated that children may be reluctant to tell adults about bullying due to feelings of embarrassment, fear or fear of their parents’ reactions. The above source suggests that you let school officials, such as head teachers, nurses or counsellors, know about the situation to prevent further problems.

When it comes to your child, the Bosco Smarter Parenting website says that it’s crucial to teach children to be assertive to prevent abuse. By teaching them how to communicate effectively, it is stated that they can de-escalate situations and avoid aggressive comebacks. According to the above-mentioned source, role-playing bullying scenarios can help them practise their responses while pointing out the dynamics of the situation.

It’s important to teach them that they can control their own reactions and choose between inflaming or defusing situations, the publication adds.

You are also encouraged to teach your child to intervene when seeing others being bullied. “Experts recommend that children physically stand with the victim, turn them away from the bully and walk with them in a different direction. Children can also assertively confront the bully, get the other children on their side and then walk away with the victim.”

A child’s strong sense of self is crucial for their ability to resist bullying. Impact Parents state that children should believe in their dignity and worth, understand they can control their response and refuse to bully back.

Positive self-talk and appropriate responses to bullying are said to be essential and children need to understand that nothing they own is worth more than their safety.
