Going back to school as a mature student is a reminder that dreams do not have an expiry date. While some people may believe that education is reserved for the young, Sizolwethu Shabangu, popularly known as Sompisi, is proving that it is never too late to invest in yourself. Balancing academics, work and business may not be easy, but with discipline, planning and determination, it is possible to keep moving towards your goals.

Shabangu is currently pursuing a Bachelor of Arts in Humanities, majoring in English Language and Theology, at the University of Eswatini’s Kwaluseni Campus.

He said continuing his studies was important because he wanted to grow academically, develop his skills and eventually establish himself in his chosen career. He also hopes to create better opportunities for his family.

“Education gives me confidence and opens doors that one can never fully comprehend. With education, I am able to grow intellectually,” he said. For Shabangu, returning to the classroom is also about demonstrating that personal growth has no age limit. He believes investing in oneself remains worthwhile, regardless of where one is in life.

DISCIPLINE

However, juggling school, work and business requires self-discipline and a clear understanding of one’s priorities. Shabangu said he plans his week in advance, setting aside time for different responsibilities to remain organised and avoid unnecessary pressure.

He explained that setting clear timelines helps him complete tasks on time and prevents last-minute panic. Approaching each responsibility with seriousness and love also keeps him motivated.

“Lastly, I set my priorities straight. I have time for playing and time for serious business,” he said. For other mature students struggling to balance their responsibilities, Shabangu shares 10 practical tips to help them stay focused and make progress.

Shabangu’s journey is a reminder that maturity should never be mistaken for the end of learning.

With a clear purpose, discipline and a willingness to grow, it is possible to pursue an education while meeting other responsibilities. The journey may be demanding, but every lesson learnt brings one closer to a better future.
