Why God allows certain battles

Life is filled with battles. Some are physical, emotional, mental or spiritual. Many people often ask difficult questions during painful seasons: ‘Why is this happening to me?’ ‘If God loves me, why would He allow this struggle?’ In moments of hardship, it can feel as though God is distant or silent. However, throughout the Bible, we see that God sometimes allows certain battles, not to destroy His people, but to strengthen, shape and prepare them for greater purpose.

One of the hardest truths to accept is that growth often comes through struggle. Just as gold is refined through fire, faith is strengthened through trials. Without challenges, many people would never discover their true strength, dependence on God or spiritual maturity. Battles reveal what is inside the heart and teach believers to trust God beyond their comfort zones.

The story of David is a powerful example.

Before David became king, he faced lions, bears, rejection and the giant Goliath. Those battles were not meaningless; they prepared him for leadership. The same young shepherd who fought private battles in the wilderness later stood boldly before a giant, because he had already learnt to trust God in difficult situations.

Sometimes God allows battles to draw people closer to Him. During seasons of comfort, people may become spiritually distant or self-reliant. However, in moments of pain, fear or uncertainty, many begin to pray more deeply and seek God more sincerely. Hardship often reminds believers that human strength alone is not enough.

The Bible never promises a life without struggles. Even faithful servants of God faced battles. Job endured suffering, Joseph experienced betrayal and imprisonment and Paul faced persecution. Yet through every trial, God remained present. Their stories remind believers that struggles are not always signs of God’s absence. Sometimes they are part of His process.

There are also battles that protect people from pride, distraction or dangerous paths. Sometimes unanswered prayers and closed doors are forms of God’s protection. While people may not understand His decisions immediately, God sees the bigger picture that human eyes cannot see.

Spiritual battles are another reality Christians face. The enemy often attacks through fear, temptation, discouragement and doubt. This is why believers must stay rooted in prayer, Scripture and faith. Not every battle is visible, but every battle shapes the soul.

However, God never allows battles without also providing strength to endure them. Isaiah 41:10 reminds believers not to fear because God is with them. Even when life feels overwhelming, God walks beside His people through every storm.

One of the greatest dangers during difficult seasons is giving up too soon. Many people want immediate escape from pain, but some lessons can only be learnt in the middle of the struggle. Battles may feel painful in the moment, but they often produce wisdom, strength and deeper faith that comfort never could. God does not waste pain. Every battle, every delay, every tear and every struggle can serve a greater purpose in His hands. Sometimes the very battle people wish to avoid becomes the place where they discover God’s strength most deeply.
