At first glance, the neatly arranged bottles of cleaning products on a small table may seem ordinary, but behind them stands a story of resilience, faith and determination. With a warm smile and quiet confidence, Melissa Malinga represents more than just a brand, she represents a journey of transformation.

Melissa Malinga is a vibrant and driven young woman who turned adversity into opportunity. What began as a small escape from unemployment has grown into a thriving business known as The Legacy Industries (Pty) LTD, a company now manufacturing and supplying household cleaning products, car care items, personal care, laundry care and hair care solutions.

“I wanted to grow; not just physically, but professionally,” Melissa says. “This business is my baby. I want to see it grow and become something I can one day be proud of and pass on to my children.”

Humble beginnings

Melissa’s journey was not always straightforward. While studying at the Vaal University of Technology in South Africa, she began building her career in the cosmetic industry. She later interned at Amka Products, where she transitioned into a full-time role and worked for three years. She went on to work for two other companies, building a solid six-year career in the industry, with her most recent role at L’Oreal South Africa. Her journey took an unexpected turn when she had to leave her job to resolve work permit challenges. The process took longer than expected and by the time she returned, her position had already been filled.

She came back home in October 2018, facing uncertainty, but also standing at the beginning of a new chapter. What seemed like a setback would soon become the foundation of something far greater. “The only thing I had with me was drive and God,” she recalls. “I knew he couldn’t let me come back home just to sit idle, and he didn’t. He came through for me.” That moment of uncertainty became the starting point of her entrepreneurial journey.

Building the ‘legacy’

After coming back home, Melissa decided to start her own business, a decision that would ultimately change the course of her life. From selling small one litre bottles to individuals, Melissa gradually expanded her business. Today, she produces and supplies in bulk, up to 20 litres, serving not only individuals but also small businesses and companies.

Company name

The name Legacy is deeply personal. “This name was inspired by my longing to create something beautiful for my lineage, something I can leave behind,” she says. Her vision is clear: To become one of the leading companies in the industry while creating job opportunities within the country. Her mission is equally powerful: “To let excellence be our brand, to inspire and empower every person or organisation to achieve more,” she said.

Faith at the centre

At the heart of Melissa’s business lies an unshakable foundation: Faith. “Prayer is the company’s foundation for harmony and positivity,” she says. She further stated that this spiritual grounding has helped her navigate the unpredictable nature of entrepreneurship, including slow business periods and the challenge of retaining clients. “You must prepare to be broken down by challenges, but never allow yourself to stay down,” Melissa advises. “Some clients will be there today and gone tomorrow, not because your service has changed, but because they can. Learn to get over it quickly and keep going.”

Leadership and growth

Although she currently operates without a fixed team, Melissa describes her leadership style as fair and collaborative.

“I lead by doing and by listening,” she explains. “I value the opinions of the people I work with because that helps me grow as a leader.”

Her focus remains on maintaining consistency in product quality and supply, an essential factor in building trust with customers.

A message of hope

Melissa’s story is not just about business, it’s about perseverance, belief and purpose.

“I never imagined I would create something that could sustain me after losing everything before,” she admits. “It’s only by God’s grace.”
