EZULWINI – Australian golfer Austin Bautista was a cut above the rest, firing on all cylinders to capture the fifth edition of the 2026 FNB Eswatini Challenge at the pristine Ezulwini Golf and Country Club yesterday.
The stellar four-day championship teed off on Thursday and reached its thrilling climax yesterday afternoon, drawing a world-class field of tee-to-green talent from across the globe, including Africa, Europe, America and Asia.
A contingent of 15 local emaSwati golfers also stepped onto the fairways to vie for glory, though they unfortunately missed the weekend cut against top-tier competition.
Bautista stamped his class on the layout, carding a blistering winning total of 199 to bank the lion’s share of the purse, taking home E396 250. He kept his card remarkably clean under intense pressure, holding off a charging pack where Herman Loubser, Dylan Mostert and Benjamin Kedochim shared the second spot after signing for matching totals of 201.
Meanwhile, local favourite Brandon-Jude Rennie finished as the highest-placed liSwati golfer, earning E30 000 for his valiant effort on home soil.
Reflecting on his triumph down the stretch, the champion expressed his sincere gratitude to the Nomads for their support, noting that competing in the kingdom meant a lot to him.
He mentioned that while the wind gave him a bit of trouble on the final day, he focused on keeping his energy high and staying positive throughout the round.
He added that he genuinely enjoys playing golf for a living, advising aspiring local golfers to keep the game fun, avoid overcomplicating things and practice consistently.
“I love competing and I really appreciate the hospitality here. The wind was playing tricks on me for a bit, but I just tried to keep my energy high and stay positive. My advice to others is if you enjoy it, do it for fun, do not make it hard on yourself and practice a lot,” Bautista said.
The prize-giving ceremony was graced by high-ranking dignitaries, with FNB Chief Executive Officer (CEO) Thokozani Dlamini and Minister for Sports, Culture and Youth Affairs Bongani Nzima doing the honours. Meanwhile, caddie Bheki Bhembe bagged the caddie spoils, standing to pocket no less than five per cent of the winning prize for his bag-carrying brilliance throughout the tournament.
Aligning with the tournament’s spirit of excellence, FNB Eswatini CEO Dlamini announced a firm commitment to helping emaSwati golfers develop and compete on regional and international stages. Reflecting on the immense success of the fifth edition, which brought together over 100 international professionals, 15 local golfers and 30 juniors, Dlamini noted that the tournament served as a powerful driver of economic growth within the local hospitality and retail sectors.
Demonstrating a hands-on approach to youth and sports development, Dlamini highlighted the introduction of the inaugural FNB Junior Golf Day and announced a special separate fund of E60 000 dedicated to the top three highest-placed emaSwati golfers.
“It is our dream to see local golfers become competitive in regional and international golf, and as FNB Eswatini, we will walk this growth journey with them,” the CEO stated.
Echoing Dlamini’s sentiments regarding the economic footprint of the tournament, Minister for Sports, Culture and Youth Affairs Bongani Nzima emphasised the crossover benefits that major sporting events bring to the kingdom’s tourism and commercial sectors.
“Beyond the putting and chipping on the green, our economy has been invigorated by the life that comes with the Challenge. From hospitality to retailers, the benefits of the Challenge have cascaded across a wide spectrum, ensuring that this proudly local tournament resonates with many emaSwati and local businesses,” Nzima said.
The minister added that the tournament served as a prime platform to showcase the nation’s beauty and hospitality to international professionals and guests, leveraging the expertise of the Eswatini Tourism Authority to encourage repeat visits.
“We look forward to welcoming you back to Eswatini soon to celebrate your victory while experiencing some of our remarkable getaway destinations. I will ask our Eswatini Tourism Authority CEO to share with you a comprehensive list of options,” he added.
Concluding his remarks, the minister warmly invited international visitors to return to the kingdom, invoking a traditional siSwati sentiment.
“In siSwati we say, ‘ingoma lemnandzi iyaphindvwa,’ which loosely means, ‘a good song must be repeated.’ If you indeed enjoyed being in Eswatini, we urge you to visit us again. At a time when meaningful human connection is more important than ever, Eswatini stands ready to peacefully mingle with the rest of the world and warmly welcome our visitors,” the minister said.
