EZULWINI — Mbabane Highlanders AM President Shauwn ‘MaMkhize’ Mkhize led the team’s Heritage Day celebrations at Mantenga Cultural Village in a vibrant display of tradition.
The festivities saw players and technical staff swap their football boots for traditional Eswatini regalia that included _emahiya_ branded in the club’s iconic colours. The occasion coincided with South Africa’s national public holiday on September 24, a day dedicated to honouring the diverse cultural heritage, languages and shared identity of the ‘Rainbow Nation’.
Highlanders, one of the longest-standing sporting institutions in the Kingdom of Eswatini, formally established a cross-border connection with their South African neighbours in July 2025 when the flamboyant businesswoman took over. Her arrival brought rapid change, including a high-profile rebranding attempt that introduced the gold accent colours of her former South African side, Royal AM. However, following an uproar from traditional supporters, the capital giants reverted to their cherished classic black and white ahead of the new season.
Speaking via an official statement, the club highlighted the deep historical and cultural ties binding the two southern African neighbours.
“Mbabane Highlanders AM joins our South African neighbours and friends in celebrating the rich diversity of cultures, beliefs, traditions and identities that shape our shared region,” the statement read. “As one of the longest-standing sporting institutions in Eswatini, we recognise the importance of heritage in preserving where we come from while strengthening the bonds that connect us across borders.”
The event at Mantenga marked a harmonious blend of football diplomacy and cultural pride. The team emphasised that the partnership continues to reflect shared passion and heritage.
