(At Siteki Hotel)
SITEKI – South African duo of Callum Ormiston and Lize-Ann Louw outclassed locals yesterday.
They each won by a difference of 18 minutes in their category having cycled for minimum 2 hours. Ormiston raced in the 112 kilometres while Louw challenged herself to 90km.
Over 100 cyclists braved unfavourable weather conditions during the inaugural Shirley Motsa Memorial Race. A large crop was formed by locals with some internationals.
The race categories started slowly just like the drizzling Siteki Hotel skies. Regardless, rain started pouring heavily just before they climbed the hill before Mhlumeni Border Post.
This publication had to wait for more than 10 minutes to see locals make a turn at the starting points after they had passed.
They eventually emerged as winners with Joyrun Continental cyclist Ormiston earning E3 000, while Tshenolo Women’s PRO Cycling Club’s Louw pocketed E1 500.
Notably, Louw was the only racer in her category. As per the registration rules, only females were allowed entry in this distance. Nevertheless, youngsters Thobekile Dlamini, Ntsika Mabuza and Sivuyile Gulwako opted to participate in this same category. Thobekile won first place and received E600.
His counterparts Mabuza and Gulwako who followed each other earned E400 and E300, respectively.
