THE Institute of Development Management (IDM) Eswatini proudly welcomed its newest cohort of students with a vibrant and purposeful two-day orientation programme, held at IDM campus from July 25 to 26, 2025. This year’s semester theme was, ‘Great things are within your reach,’ which was a rallying call for students to embrace the journey ahead with focus, resilience and purpose. The orientation was designed not only to inform students but also to inspire them, helping ease the transition into higher learning while cultivating a culture of excellence, integrity and service. The event opened with the national anthem and an opening prayer, setting a respectful and hopeful tone. IDM Country Director Karabo Baipidi, delivered the keynote address in which he warmly welcomed the students and encouraged them to take ownership of their journey. In a powerful statement, he urged: “Be the agent of your own success,” reminding students that character, determination and discipline are key pillars of achievement. He emphasised IDM’s commitment to supporting students throughout their academic journey and announced a significant milestone, the
introduction of on-campus accommodation. This new development aims to bring students closer to essential resources and enrich their overall learning experience. Baipidi also highlighted that IDM is actively working on strategies to enhance emotional wellness support for students,
including tutoring and initiatives to recognise and reward academic excellence.
BACKGROUNDS
Following this, a powerful and heartfelt motivational address was delivered by Shongwe, an honourable Member of Parliament. He urged students not to be defined by their backgrounds but to rise above them. “With all of your background, get the
opportunity,” he declared, emphasising that the present moment offers a chance to rewrite one’s story. Honourable MP Shongwe encouraged

students to use their time at IDM to grow not just academically, but also personally and professionally. He left them with a challenge to stay hungry for success, be teachable and constantly strive for more than what is comfortable. In one of the most engaging sessions of the day, Terence Thwala delivered an eye-opening presentation on financial literacy. He stressed the long-term value of financial discipline, warning students that: “What you don’t manage now will manage you later.” He advised students to budget wisely, avoid unnecessary spending and be intentional with
every cent. Thwala encouraged students to develop a habit of saving and to make conscious financial decisions that support their goals. He underscored the importance of distinguishing between needs and wants and cultivating habits of discipline early on, stating that irresponsible spending in student life could affect one’s future. In closing, the IDM 2025 orientation set a strong foundation for a successful academic journey. With inspiration, support and a clear sense of purpose, students now step forward as part of a community committed to growing great minds, because truly, great things are within
their reach.
