In the aftermath of World War II, Japan faced an urgent need for affordable and reliable transportation. Out of this necessity, one man’s vision would go on to reshape not only his nation’s mobility, but also the entire world’s motorcycle industry.

That man was Soichiro Honda, a gifted mechanic whose passion for engineering and innovation gave birth to one of the most iconic motorcycle brands in history.

Honda’s story began in 1937 when Soichiro founded a small company to manufacture piston rings for Toyota. After years of experimentation and perseverance, he mastered production, but his factory was later destroyed during the war.

Rather than giving up, Soichiro turned adversity into opportunity. In 1946, he began attaching small two-stroke engines to bicycles, a simple yet transformative idea that led to the creation of the A-Type motorised bicycle, Japan’s first step towards mass motorisation.

Two years later, on September 24, 1948, Honda Motor Co., Ltd. was officially established. Soichiro soon partnered with Takeo Fujisawa, a businessman whose strategic acumen helped propel the company forward. Together, they built a company rooted in innovation, quality and reliability, values that remain at the core of Honda’s identity today.

The company’s first fully developed motorcycle, the Model D (Dream D), debuted in 1949. It set the tone for decades of progress, leading to groundbreaking models like the 1958 Super Cub, the world’s best-selling motor vehicle and the 1969 CB750, which introduced the first mass-produced four-cylinder engine.

Honda motorcycles soon became synonymous with dependability, performance and accessibility, qualities that inspired the slogan, “You meet the nicest people on a Honda.”

Through the 1970s and beyond, Honda continued pushing boundaries with iconic models such as the Gold Wing GL1000, the CBR sport series and technologically advanced machines like the VFR1200F with dual-clutch transmission. From urban commuters to racing champions, Honda motorcycles have evolved into a symbol of freedom and precision engineering.

Today, Honda’s legacy thrives across continents, inspiring generations of riders and setting the benchmark for innovation. In Eswatini, this proud tradition is carried forward by Xtreme Trading, the approved and certified Honda dealer in the kingdom.
