Every day the world is searching for something that can make life better. People are searching for hope, for kindness, for honesty and for a sense of purpose. Nowadays there is great progress in technology and knowledge, yet many hearts still feel empty and restless. People still face challenges, friendships break and society often feels divided. In the middle of all this, one question quietly remains. What kind of people can make the world a better place?

In the Scripture, Jesus Christ gave a simple but powerful answer. Speaking to a crowd during the Sermon on the Mount, He described His followers in a surprising way. He did not call them rulers, warriors or famous leaders. Instead, He called them something very ordinary yet very powerful. He said they were the salt of the earth.

At first this may sound like a strange comparison. Yet, salt can transform whatever it touches. A small amount can change the taste of an entire meal. In the same way, a life filled with faith, love and integrity can influence families and communities. In the Gospel according to the Book of Matthew, Jesus gives one of the most powerful teachings about how believers should live. In the Gospel of Matthew 5:13, He says: “You are the salt of the earth. But if the salt loses its saltiness, how can it be made salty again?” This verse carries a deep message for believers and for anyone seeking a meaningful life.

In the time of Jesus, salt was extremely valuable. It was used to preserve food, to bring flavour to meals and even to purify. Without salt, food would spoil quickly and taste bland. When Jesus called His followers the salt of the earth, He was teaching that people who follow God should bring goodness, hope and positive influence to the world.Salt changes everything it touches. In the same way, people who live according to the teachings of Christ should make a difference wherever they go. Being the salt of the earth does not mean being perfect. It means living in a way that reflects love, kindness and truth.

One way we can be the salt of the earth is by showing kindness. In a world where people are often quick to judge and slow to help, kindness stands out. A simple act such as helping someone in need, speaking encouraging words or offering support to someone who is struggling can change a person’s day. Sometimes, the smallest acts carry the greatest impact.

Another way to be salt is by living with integrity. Integrity means doing the right thing even when no one is watching.

In our workplaces, schools and communities, honesty and fairness matter. When believers choose truth instead of shortcuts, they reflect the character of God.

Jesus also taught that believers should be peacemakers. In Gospel of Matthew 5:9, He says: “Blessed are the peacemakers, for they will be called children of God.” Being the salt of the earth means bringing peace where there is conflict. It means choosing forgiveness instead of revenge and understanding instead of anger.

Faith is also an important part of being the salt of the earth. When people face difficulties, they often look for hope. A believer who remains strong in faith during hard times becomes a powerful testimony. Others begin to see that faith in God brings strength, peace and direction.

The teaching of Jesus is not only for those who attend church. It is an invitation to everyone. The world today needs people who bring goodness, compassion and truth.

Think about the places you visit each day. Your home, your workplace, your church and your neighbourhood are all places where you can be the salt of the earth. A smile, a helping hand, a prayer or a word of encouragement can make a difference in someone’s life.

However, Jesus also gave a warning. If salt loses its flavour, it becomes useless. In the same way, believers must guard their character and values. Faith should not only be spoken about on Sunday but lived out every day. The good news is that God gives each person the ability to influence the world for good. You do not need wealth, power or fame to make a difference. All you need is a willing heart.

When believers live with love, kindness and faith, they become exactly what Jesus called them to be. They become the salt of the earth.

The question for believers and for anyone searching for meaning is simple. Are we bringing flavour, hope and goodness into the world around us.
