MANZINI – The recent Recharge Your Marriage Conference hosted by Dr Pastor Bakhe proved to be a significant gathering, attracting couples from beyond Eswatini’s borders.

Attendees travelled from Pretoria, the Eastern Cape, Limpopo, Mozambique and Nelspruit, highlighting the event’s growing reputation as a platform for strengthening marriages.

Held at the Mavuso Trade and Exhibition Centre, the conference aimed to address urgent issues facing relationships in Eswatini, amid concerns over gender-based violence (GBV) and relationship breakdowns. The organisers stressed the importance of recharging and strengthening marriages as a means to combat these societal challenges.

Dr Pastor Bakhe expressed his genuine surprise at the international turnout. “I am surprised, and at the same time, shocked that some couples came from countries outside Eswatini to be part of the conference. This is humbling and gives one the courage to keep doing more,” he said on stage.

The event was not solely focused on relationship advice. It also provided a platform for artists and entertainers, creating an engaging environment for couples. Local artist Sands delivered an electrifying performance with his hit ‘Tigi’, energising the room. South African musician Karabo and comedian Summary also kept attendees entertained, ensuring the event was both informative and enjoyable. Summary’s comedy routines resonated with couples, especially jokes about matching outfits. He noted that couples who dress alike often have a healthy relationship likely to last. These light-hearted moments helped foster a sense of unity and shared experience among attendees. Equally important were the health and well-being sessions. Couples received vital information on managing conditions like diabetes and the importance of maintaining a balanced diet. The organisers discussed the value of teamwork within relationships, encouraging couples to cook together and share household chores without adhering strictly to traditional gender roles.

In Eswatini, where GBV remains a widespread issue, initiatives like the Recharge Your Marriage Conference play a crucial role. They promote dialogue around healthy, respectful relationships and the importance of mutual support.

By emphasising communication, health and shared responsibilities, the event aims to build stronger marriages capable of withstanding societal pressures. As the conference drew participants from neighbouring countries and beyond, it revealed a collective desire to nurture lasting relationships. In a country grappling with social challenges, such gatherings are important for fostering resilience and hope for healthier, more respectful partnerships across Eswatini.
