MBABANE – The Ministry of Tourism and Environmental Affairs has made a big announcement, as it continues promoting ecotourism.
The ministry has now included Sandlane Rock Art sites on the national monuments register. This key development emphasises government’s commitment to recognising and preserving the country’s rich cultural and natural heritage.
This decisive move follows an enquiry by Member of Parliament Lomalanga Dlamini, who sought clarity on the ministry’s initiatives towards advancing ecotourism. The debate was formally documented in the ministry’s portfolio committee report dated July 2025, highlighting the ongoing efforts to diversify and enrich the tourism sector.
Dlamini’s enquiry also extended to scenic views and caves at Mangcongco, questioning the ministry on their strategic plans for these sites. “What is the ministry doing towards developing ecotourism such as Bush paintings (rock art sites), scenic views, caves at Mangcongco?” she asked.
In response, the ministry affirmed its active involvement at tourism development initiatives. “The ministry, through the Eswatini Tourism Authority (ETA), is engaged in community tourism initiatives. The MP, as well as other constituencies, are advised to contact the entity to explore the development of tailored tourism products specific to each community,” the report stated.
The ministry revealed that the rock art sites at Sandlane have now been officially registered.
